Ok lots of questions. There are no apps for this site as far as I know but somebody should set one up. I have 3G on on the pond and am able to use my iPhone to post. The kites were a bunch of kids hOoked to sleds. The ice was around 4.5 inches with around 10 inches of snow. Fish were biting but it dryed uP around 2. I'll be up on the ice around 11 or so tomorrow if any of you guys want to fish. Let me know!

I didn't do too bad out there today. Caught about 12 keepers. My dog would have been happier with about 6 inches less of snow. Not too bad for the first trip of the season.

Tell me more about parking at the elms golf course.  Last year you just parked at lot or the road.  Who takes the $?  Why is is it different from last year? Is there anywhere else to park near? I fished theren last yeart 15 times last year with no issues.

not many golfers this time of year ,and it does cost to have it plowed , the way it was left last year fishermen are lucky  that he is even letting anyone park there at all , if you fish big bay you pay to park

ll 3 places to park at Sandy are 5 bux, I would just be happy to be able to fish the Elm side, I like it better as the walk to decent fish is shorter. The only thing that's better about GP is there is a porta pooper in the parking lot the lady puts there, it came in handy after that breakfast at Brandy's last week. Somebody forgot to turn the heater on though.

Not to beat a dead horse, but a buddy of mine lives on Oneida Lake. I went to fish with him last year and I went to park on this residential street. He told me that the people there DO NOT want any ice fisherman parking there. It thought that was weird because the street was fairly vacant and plenty of room to park without getting in the way of peoples properties... Well, he told me that some butthead fisherman came off the ice and took a dump in a persons boat they had parked and covered on the side of their house.... What kind of person does that!!!! People like that need a serious beating. That is why we are all disliked by locals. I would love to get my hands on that guy...
Be safe, clean and have fun

Killed'em again on Sandy. I brought the old man with me for his first time of the year. We fished together in a two man shanty, moved once, only about 20 yards. We had a limit by noon and ran out of bait 2 cups of fatheads by 3:30 we used eyes for 15 mins or so after but only attracted the smallest ones, did get a few nice gills with them though. We ended up getting 77 total. If you go out tomorrow and you hear a phone ringing answer it its me calling to see if its still working. I lost it on the ice in between the 20 yards that we moved, its blue. I'll be out in the afternoon to look. Good luck guys.

I didn't fish today but looked like there was a fair share of guys out today. O only a month ago I found my phone run over in the street in pieces....best 50 dollar phone ever. Went out yesterday and fished by boggey. I brought a friend and we both limited out in five hours with a ton of slobs. Great day on the ice. The best part of the day was hearing boggey get excited about all the slobe he was pulling through the ice.

Man I'm hooked and im bummed that I can only fish one more day this week. Anybody on here going to the pinstripe bowl. If you are pm me. Ill be tailgating Thursday morning.

I think we get better info on this link. And it easier to find sandy pond.
I agree,SANDY POND seems to stick out better than "small water Jefferson county" for some strange reason. I have to look thru the whole list a couple of times to find it and i don't know why LOL :icefish:

My buddy and I are thinking of going to Sandy Pond on Sat. We are going to park at wigwam and I was just wondering, without giving your 'honey spots' away, where is best area to go on the lake (straight out, to the left..right).  Also, what depth range are you catching these slobs vs. the dinks some people are catching? Any help would be appreciated, it'll be first time out this year!

Please be conservative with the ice reports, their are enough idiots out there all ready and more stting at home that believe everything they read. I didn't see anything near a foot thick ice. Was nearer 4 / 5 inch of real ICE, with the same amount of crystalized snow/slush on top. I did see thinner ice, Someone marked the spot with thier 4 wheeler, look for the 2 front tires sticking up thur ice off the Elms.

Ice wasnt to bad- a little sloppy coming off, will only get worse with the temps and rain but plenty of ice- parked at the elms, drag back up was rough without any snow or ice, but had our limit by 1130 it was all good- mostly 9" and up, with more than a dozen between 11-12" - hope to be back out again, freezer is loving fresh perch filets

Enjoyed my time there on Thursday.I am sure 4 hour limits of really good perch is not something I should ever expect again but I will be back.lots of $  making the trip for one day but worth it. so my question, is it pretty solid throughout the winter or is this an early ice thing that dies real hard later on like a lot of smaller bodies of water?those perch gotta migrate in from lake all winter long?or should I get my ass back up there asap?

Happy new year all. The ice was 4 plus inches off the wigwam snow mobiles all over it was a bit slushy but hoping we drilled enough holes today to drain all that water on top. I got my limit by 1/4 to 1 did good heaviest limit yet this season. I had to move about 200 yards away from my cell phone spot. I didn't get into them untill 10:30.

Boggey I was walking about thirty feet from him at all times. I was afraid he was going to use me as a floatation device.
Title: Re: Sandy pond
Post by: brewsta3224 on Jan 02, 2011, 11:59 PM
Floataion device? No...try anchor. There could always benefit from structure in such a flat bottom pond. @ Boggey... no offense taken. I wouldnt walk next to me on 3" of ice either. This is not ice to be just bombing around on without paying attention and really watching where your walking or stepping into. I've been walking hardwater for over 30 years, today the ice spooked me. Be smart, be safe, don't fish alone... i'm gonna give it a couple days to stiffen back up...
Title: Re: Sandy pond
Post by: Cusefan78 on Jan 03, 2011, 08:26 AM
Just to rub it in brew had such a slow day that I decided to let him catch up by taking two hours off. At one point I decided that I should change my name to the cuseslayer. In all seriousness be careful on the ice. Brew weakened it yesterday when he carried all my slobs in.
Title: Re: Sandy pond
Post by: brewsta3224 on Jan 03, 2011, 09:34 AM
Yeah, he was getting cocky and the Ice God slowed him down a bit...He didnt take a break as much as he went on a Dinkfest, and I may not have did as well as Cuse, but I kept 39 perch in 3.5 hrs fishing with 17 being over 10" and 3 of those over 12"...nothing under 9". The ice was spooky with no snow on it you could see where it had originally froze, broke up and refroze(prior to being good ice at all. I think I like a little snow on it)... realistically best ice I saw didn't exceed 3.5" and there were many open holes.

Post by: Cusefan78 on Jan 03, 2011, 09:45 AM

Fished from 930-1, nice limit of 9" and up perch- water seemed a bit cloudy today, but the bite was on! switched from a minnow head to perch eye on a small glo frosty and bingo...

Couldnt fit anymore on the board.... ;D
(http://i278.photobucket.com/albums/kk92/mxzxracer/IceSeason2010-2011004-2.jpg)

Overall ice was in good shape, had 5-6" of good black where I was, snow was starting to build a little, probably 4-6" in some spots with some drifting-
A special thanks to KissaFish- Helped me out big time when not only could I not get traction with the sled but when I did I would drop to one cylinder- It was slooooooow and painful process to try and get moving, he zipped over seeing me struggling and offered to tow my shanty back in for me while I limped my sled in-
Just goes to show the high class of folks that are out there fishing around us!  THANKS AGAIN!!!!

There are several places to park most notably the Wig-Wam (a restaurant) the Elms (a golf course and Green Point to mention a few, and depending on what type of fish you are looking for each has it's strengths and weaknesses. After you make three more posts sind me a private message (PM)
and I will give you some more information. Welcome to the site and to the pond ....Boggey
Thanks for the info!!!!!!!!!!

ice thickness is patchy from ranging from three to six inches in spots, overall saw many sleds and atvs on ice, fishing was decent but no pike today , anyone ever get a walleye outa sandy?
used to get walleye every time until a company called canadian killed most of them when they were spawning in the streams.

I know this a question you guys hear all the time but..... I'm getting vex or marc. Or hummingbird.  I've done some research but still up in the air.  What's the biggest differents.  And why one over the other. I spending a lot of $. And I'm only doing it one time.  I want one good choice.  I'm figuring $400 to $500 range.  Thanx
Ps. went to the pond Sunday.  Got about 40 good one with two guys.  Not to bad.

I have a marcum vx1pro and when I was asking around and doing research on them I found that it was the best bang for your buck. It also has ir to cancel out interference from the guy next to you and zoom which is clutch. My buddy has the more expensive one and I will tell you the lines are more exact but in my opinion it's not worth the extra $200. If you want to play with mine when I'm at the pond youre more then welcome to.

Fished GP today.  Ice is about 6 inches, saw one snowmobile out.  Pretty easy walking, patches of bare ice in between hard packed snow.  Bare ice is slick,  cleats would be helpful.  Usual mix of perch, sunnies, and gills.  Nothing outstanding and no crappies.

I'm planning on taking my 7 year old son out this weekend on Sandy Pond for his birthday.  We are both ice fishing junkies and almost always take the trip up to the Thousand Islands to ice fish.  I have heard that Sandy Pond is a good place to fish for Pike and the perch should keep the youngster busy in between flags.  I'd never fished up there before though and have no idea where to go.  I am quite familiar with the area though if someone could please point me in the right direction I'd appreciate it.  I do have an ATV so if that helps then great.

On a side note, the poor kid had a terrible birthday this week (Dad was in Colorado for a meeting all week and Mom got rushed into emergency surgery on the morning of his birthday) so I'm trying to make it up to him with a good fishing trip followed by Dad's famous fish fry.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks

Ryan

Ryan you have a few choices. You can go out of the elms, the wig wam, and gp. Out if each area you will see where people are. It's pretty small and there are a ton of fish. I'll be up there tomorrow if you need to be pointed in the right direction. Pm me.

Went today, got there at, we at 8am and parked at the Elms Golf Course, $5, quick walk to the ice.  Pulling the 2-man shanty was tough, we made it about 2/3 of the way to the larger group of shantys further out.  Set up in 12' of water and sorted through many, many fish for those larger than 9".  Ended up with 35 9-12".  Minnows on a larger Caty jig or Kastmaster were the ticket today.  Only smaller fish interested in spikes.
The wind really picked up around 11 am and it slowed down but we still were catching a few along the way.  Left at 2 when it felt like we were going to go for a ride in the shanty.
Came home and fried those fish up along with stuffed shells, roasted potatoes, greek salad, homemade wine, and Baileys on the rocks.  Bonus: The Jets win!  Perfect end to a perfect day!

We only make red wine, so that has to go with every meal.  It does!     As great as the meal was, I enjoyed it even more because I had my fishing buddies there with their girlfriends, and my wife and 2 daughters all at the same table for a nice relaxing meal.

The walk was tough, maybe 6-8" of snow on top at 8am.  From 8-10 or 10:30 there was no wind at all, the sun actually came out.  But after that it was blowing pretty hard and steady.  I am sure a lot of that snow has blown away by now.

I fish when I can and try not to let the weather stop me as I only get a limited number of days to get out there.

Any hints on presentation??

I have been fishing of the Elms. Took my 7 year old out Monday from 8-11am, and there wasn't a min she didn't have a fish on. She even caught a 24 inch pike on a jig rod. We did catch some slobs, but she was happy with anything. Just about anything you drop to them they were hitting. I had my best luck with a hammerd copper sweedish pimple (a pike stole it on me). I was using fatheads. Head out to where all the shantys are. It is a bit of a walk, but worth it.

I fished GP last nite, what a crappy evening & I don't mean fish.  I've had them dialed in pretty good this yr, but not last night.  Started by getting truck stuck in a hole in the parking lot  :%$#!: :%$#!: Had to dig it out by hand with a tire iron to break up the hard pack.  Lost 30 mins of fishing.  Got out there, setup BAM 2 almost instantly both lost at the hole, one was in the running for best of yr. Marked LOTS of fish was able to jig them in easily, but they just wanted to look.  I dropped everything from 3mm fiskas up to big Caty's.  So I started trying different stuff, popped a few on whole Rosie's on a orange dot caty glow.  Never dropped rosies for craps.  I bought them for perch this morning.  I was just trying everything.  I'd have tried the peanuts I was eating if I could've got them to stay on the jig  :-\ ::).  All in all though, at least I was fishing.  Wound up with 9 keepers & 3 gills.
When I was picking up bait last night at Salmon River Sports, I was told someone pulled a 30" 11lb eye out of the Pond yesterday  :o :o  Said it was the biggest they'd ever seen outa there.
Good luck all, off to the Elms.

Snow & slush is easy traveling now, a few inches, but wind blown down, slush has froze up nicely. (except by the ramp at the elms, that's still a mess).
I fell once saw others falling too.  Today lots of bare ice covered with the inch or so of fresh powder, a bit slick, will be wearing creepers tommorrow.  Ice is 7-8 black with a couple white on top of that.  Water is VERY clear for the pond.  I fished 13 fow could almost sight fish at the bottom.  I did close up the windows & sight 8-10 down.  Cool to watch 'em hit.  Lots were hitting the sinker on my deadstick rather than the minnow.
Good luck!

In roughly 8 fow  ::) Sorry not to be a smartarse, but I've spent countless hours trying to figure this out.  I started chasing these buggers last year, I prefer perch over other pans (except slabs) yet I still fish GP just to learn.  I'm happy to share some info, I often post what I've tried, what worked, what didn't.   However exact methods or locations??  :cookoo:

I'm not townzee but there are 4 wheelers and sleds all over, just be careful where the creeks come in, the aren't frozen hard and it could be kinda mushy there.  About 9" of black ice in the middle, 5" of super fluffy snow last night.

NO 3 wheeler!  I just left the whiteout & blizzard at GP.  I was only one out there till about 9, 2 more showed up.  The ice was sinking all morning.  Walk out had 2-3" of slush once you were 100+/- yards out.  On the way back in Slush almost all the way, and the 2-3" areas became 4-6".  Snowing HARD.  You couldn't see where you were until you were within 50-60 yards of the docks.  That was 2 hours ago, Radar still shows heavy band there can't immagine how much slush now  :(.   Bite was a little tough, bring your finesse game.  Lots of fish came on less than a light bite, just mouthing it.
Good luck.

Fished the pond today.  Bite was a little better today....still a bit slow.  There was more snow today....and still plenty areas of slushiness.  Saw a couple of 4-wheelers get stuck today.  The cold might help.

Fished the pond today in my normal "honey hole" did pretty well with 37 keepers over 9", had 4 over 12". had to sort through alot of dinks (hundreds) but all in all a good day. There was no wind so it didn't feel as cold as it really was out there. headed back tomorrow late morning.

Was on the pond Wed.
Hard snow off the WigWam, a mile out slush and standing water everywhere.
Fishing was very slow, lots of dinks.
We'll be out this weekend, hoping to bring the family and some friends with kids for some fishing and cooking out.

Drop by and say , "hey".  Look for the flag.

So went out today drilled one hole and completely ruined my relatively new blades on my hand auger, so we had no holes. Three guys and one hole that bottomed out there was 1 inch of water, must have been a bar or something, I was not aware of that. Anyway after borrowing a 4 inch auger from a nearby fisher (Thanks again big time) got some holes drilled in an area with a little bit of debth. 3 guys fished from 12:00 till about 5 and brought home approximately 11 good size perch mostly 12 inches and above and one crappie. All in all did alright but only because some people left and i was able to use their holes and catch some decent fish. Sorry to look like a lurch just using others holes but it was my only option and I dont exactly live close to sandy pond.

There aren't too many guys that wouldn't let you borrow their auger if you asked. As long as you keep in out of the sand... ;D

Hey GCatcher. I'm heading for Oneida right now for a long walk, but yesterday was totally awesome at GP. If your getting a new guy going, might better go where 50 + fish days keep him busy. Spikes far out fished my new plastics, but just keep it small and you will do great. Magic spot was 7 fow.

thats true but i learned the hard way if a man needs holes drilled you drill for them, once i let a guy borrow mine he drilled one hole and banged it on the ice and i was left with a auger needing a new set of blades ,i have drilled lots of holes for other guys i don't mind doing it at all ,but thats just me

Fished GP yesterday from 8-2, 52 keepers.  I'm gonna try to post pics.  Thought I saw a IS sweatshirt on someone not too far from me.  Met a couple guys in the lot that fished Wigwam, said it was a zoo, and they were just checking out the bay.  They wanted to see my fish, one said "it's ok I'm not DEC." I laughed said who cares the 52 is almost half & half perch & Gills.  Not a limit, but nearly a bucketfull so good day.  He said "whoa you got those here?"  he even had to pickup one for a closer look saying looks like it came from Oneida.  Biggest so far this yr from the Pond @ 9 3/8"  Gotta love HUGE gills & Sunnies.
Slush not so bad in the middle, lots of the middle is solid with none.  However near shore 8-12" of slop for a good 100+ yards.
The bite is certainly mid-winter pattern.  Lots of people complaining they only got a dozen or so.  The only ones you'll easily notice are the dinks.  The slobs, pay attention........ Even the perch. I wound up with 11 at 10" or better, they too not so aggressive.  Tried several rigs, not really one thing better than another.  Plastics did ok, Lost 3 fiskas, got lazy & didn't re-tie as often as I should've.
Good luck.

Sorry bout that, I was REALLY late getting off the ice.  Counted my fish had 47, wasn't leaving without 50, and frustrated as S&^%.  Lost 3 pigs at the hole in 15 minutes, right around that time. .  The extra 2 came jigging my tipup holes while packing up.
Didn't notice you till you walked about 40 yards west to sit on the bucket jigging that old hole around 1:30.  I was in the Eskimo quickfish another 40 yards west of that hole.

Anyone else notice the colors of the Perch in there this yr?  Or is it just me?  Got 2 blue dinks yesterday (not quite blue enough for a good pic), a couple more with stripes barely visable, and it seemed half or more of the 6-8" fish were much blacker than yrs past or perch from the other end of the pond.

Hello to all on iceshanty.com!
First time out to Sandy Pond on Sat--I've been fishing Canadarago the last few years--they have some huge perch, but the bite is pretty slow going much of the time.  Really enjoyed the constant action--caught about 30 keepers and over 100 dinks using minnows, spikes, perch eyes and small pieces of a charteuse grub tail.  And a really cool black lab stopped by and hung out with us for a while.  Great day on the ice!  Can't wait to try out the pond in the summer!

Hey guys, Nell is our dog, and I just cracked up when I read the comments on her.  She heads out every weekend with decent weather about 10 am and comes home by 4 (she's no dummy, doesn't want to risk missing dinner),then she sleeps all week so that next Saturday morning she can do the same thing all over again.  During the summer she walks all over doing the same mooch routine.  She's been doing it since she was a pup, hence her nickname "The Shore Whore".  We usually get a couple of phone calls each weekend from folks out fishing, making sure we know she's out there and asking if she knows her way home, which, of course, she does, she knows the pond like the back of her, err, paw.

Thank you for saying such nice things about our dog, she is truly one of a kind and a very good dog.

Here she is, with Mama and the kiddo:

I fished Greene Point today. Its starting to stiffen up out there. Lots of the slush has started to freeze up. Kept 32 fish today. Kind of slow but still got quite a mess of fish. The weather men said its going to start snowing at about 3 am so itll give it another 8 or 9 hours of good cold temps to lock up a little more before the snow starts comin! About 3 or 4 inches of snow fell this morning on the ice. Walking wasnt too bad. Better than last time I was there!

I fished GP yesterday, similar results to Cheif, kept half a bucket.  Cheif you one of the ones in the clam's?  Anyway they fished one end, I the opposite.  Walking wasn't too bad, it was better, some has crusted over.  It was 15 deg when I left, I'd still guess on a mid 20's and up day could get sloppy, sleds would do fine, wheelers  :-\? Probably get out fine when cold, I'd question how sloppy it'll get mid-day, when the crust softens.

This morning's pond report...at 7:30 am it was sunny, calm and 18 degrees, the surf was roaring and there were already a bunch of folks on the ice.  Saw a couple of sleds and a 4 wheeler, and they *seemed to be* moving much better.  There is a lot of snow on top, but doesn't apprear to be as slushy, at least in the middle, I can't see the GP and Wigwam entrance ramps from my house.

thx guys i had time to take those pics when the 3 pike showed up under my hole haha. but  ended up with alot more there was a pile of fish there. the big perch and bullhead were the most aggresive. the gills and crappies are reall skitish when they come look at it and u jig it a touch they all scatter u gotta hold it like motionless the perch were just as bad as gobies during the summer if it gets near the bottom they grab it haha

i found a picture from march of 1987 the other day. i won the perch division in the wig wam derby that year. i wanted to try and scan the picture but no luck. i was there when the perch fishing was as good as it gets guys. i also watched it go down hill for 20+ years. one heck of a rebound now if you ask me. i miss the old days on the pond but now with the modern day stuff all we can do is keep up with the times. i have no plans on being in any derby this weekend at all. i will be with my load mouth partner chaseing silver colored fish today into the night.  ;) ;) @)

H.T.,
If your digital camera has a macro mode, just place the photo you want to copy down on piece of white printer paper and "come down" on the photo in macro until it fits your camera's view finder.  It's actually a picture of a picture but you are still "scanning" with the digital camera.  Might need to experiment a little with lighting and what not but it does work.  Just some $0.02.
Take care!!!

For those of you that fish Oneida and Sandy........Are the slush conditions better at Sandy??  I was planning on bringing the family up to try out icefishing Sun morning.  If the slush is as deep and wide spread up there as the places I have fished on Oneida I think it will be a short day and likely not a great experience for the 4 and 7 year old. :( :(  Will be comming out of the Wig wam

The apple's surely didn't fall far from the tree Josh for you or your cousin Tommy  (:

Your kitchen has witnessed more furs and panfish of every type, more walleye, Northern and more pot luck stew along with all night poker games than most in upstate NY !!!

The way it should be !!!!
