Most Gills have a thick fillet compared to other small fish.  I prefer Crappie, but will get good meat off a 7" gill.  A 7" Crappie goes back.

of coarse bluegills are good eating and they have a good slab of meat on em too anything under 7" is a pain to clean or over 24 bluegills are just a pain to clean

'gills & sunnies can't be beat.  I cover in heavily peppered flour, dip in a beaten egg (egg won't stick right to a fish, but will to flour), then dip the egg covered fish into plain (unseasoned) bread crumbs.  You can add some cayenne to the bread crumbs if you like a little heat..  Man!!!!! ...deeeeelicious!  Can't be beat for a Friday fish fry.

Gills are very good table fare.  My favorite way to cook them is rinse fillets with water, dredge fillets in flour, next dip fillets in beaten eggs, next dip fillets in finely ground Ritz cracker crumbs and fry, YUMMY.  As to catching them I prefer a horizontal presentation like a Gill Pill, or Ratfinkie.

bluegills are excellent.  so good that i am in a little trouble, as the supplies of bluegill fillets in my freezer from last summer are now running low and I haven't yet been able to replenish the stocks with ice caught gills.

I just fished a meal of fresh fish; perch gills and crappie. Gills are delicious, maybe a tad below perch; crappie after that IMO.

Van,the oil looks a little to hot. lol  Do you really eat those little 9 inch fish?
Title: Re: are bluegill good eating

Captain, you may be right; shooting for around 350, but don't use a thermometer. If they come out somewhat golden brown, I'm usually OK with it. ;D As for eating those 9 in. fish; I did release some bigger ones for next time.

time to revive this little thread.

frankly, asking if bluegill are good to eat is like asking if a Ferrari is expensive.

also, 9 inch 'gills are "small"? they rarely get to be 10" around here!

i only keep em if they are over 8 we eventually go down to 7 but anything smaller isnt worth the work well let them get bigger for next year but they are nice and bite size

I try to stick to 8 also, but I will keep a few 7's if it is slow

Just had a batch from last winter on Friday night. One of the best you can get,a nice thick 8 1/2 to 9 inch chunky fish, makes some of the finest. Dipped in a egg wash then into 4 C'S Italian bread crumbs and deep fried  a couple of minutes, moist and flaky white sweet flesh. I'm glad my son and I spanked them last year,we still have several bags in the freezer, because no ice this year and looking bleak.

I have to agree with everyone that Gillies are good, I on the other hand enjoy crappies even more. We get some very nice Channel Cat around here, funny thing is a lot of guys toss em' on the ice as if they aren't any good. They really don't know what they are missing, especially cold water cats in the 1 to 3 pound class.

Unless a huge gill I prefer to fry whole(after scaling/cleaning) and just fillet on the plate after fried up.  Same goes for those yummy hard water crappie.

NOt all bluegill are good eating. Please send samples to me and I will verify whether they are good or not.  Locations of hotspots-I mean-where they were caugth would be helpful.  No samples will be returned and become the property of this research center.
they determination will be easier if  you deliver them fresh to my door.
