Northern Maine
« on: Mar 13, 2018, 02:22 PM »
My camp is 40 miles north of Greenville Maine over the past years I have witnessed parties traveling on the lake after a storm like the last two storms, they would get on the lake no problem but all of a sudden they would get into an area of slush 1/2 mile away  and their two or three machines would have to spend the whole day shoveling and pushing and pulling to get off the lake they would be so tired and wet they would load onto their trailers ,Trucks and head home . I would not wish this on any fisherman!!!

I began my icefishing career on January 15, 1985 at Barn Brook on Long Lake.  The Fish River Chain opened on the 15th of the month then.  In that time I have seen great conditions, good conditions, terrible conditions, snow, rain, wind, and sun.  The two most important things I have learned are:

1) never tell everything you know,

Fishermen just do not realize that snow this time of year is heavy. and low places on the lake from the weight of snow  creates slush puddles some can be as deep as 16+ inches . machines pulling a sled that slow up get stuck in a real MESS  . I have seen machines stuck for hours. and from just riding around it all looks smooth and nice.

Or jack up the sled and leave it over night hoping it firms up enough to get off at pre-dawn
Not that has happen to me before  ::)

Fishing the same way and expecting different results.

If your going to be numb you got to be tough.  I was just speaking of this to my father this morning.  If there is not a trail blazed across the lake, I will be blazing one before I start hauling any gear across.  Just like any time of year on any body of water.  You need to know your surroundings.  Plan for the worst and hope for the best, but either way its always an experience / memory.

Between planks, slush, thunder snow, bombogensis, ethanol, windmills, offshore drilling, birds, feral cats, pike, phosphorus, alewives, slot limits, and global warming, I'm shocked anyone goes outside.

I might have to agree with you Woodchip, the definition of a fisherman is a jerk on one end of a line waiting for a jerk on the other

I didn't want to go down this road, and scare the timid, but I'm betting the ever fearsome Sabbattus crack is about to appear.

come on up! fishing kinda slow now but i bet you have most of the lake to yourself and you got a chance at a cocker! it only takes 1! plenty of places to stay on long, eagle and cross. you'd have your pick on where to stay. if nothing else , some really big y. perch can be caught on these lakes as well, while waiting for a flag. ;)
