fishing cutbait through the ice

(1/1)

panfishman13:
i've spent the past couple months targeting channel cats in a pond not far from my home. i was fortunate enough to tangle with a couple of nice fat 3 1/2 lb fish (nearly unheard of in my corner of Idaho).

their favorite bait is fillets or heads of small green sunfish or bluegill.

now, i know where to find them in summer and fall, but i have no clue where to look for them in winter. i would also like to know some good rigs for fishing cutbait through the ice. i've been using a 1/2 oz. egg sinker rig, and while it's been working fine casting in open water, i don't think it's really going to be terribly effective through the ice.

the pond i'm fishing is relatively featureless, with a very large hump in the center and 3 different logs in 2 to 4 feet of water (the biggest cats came from around these logs) there are scattered weed beds (thick, with abrupt edges when they transition onto gravel or mud). the max depth is about 9 feet, and one shore drops off quite quickly.

any help or experience would be fantastic; thanks!
