Title: Kent county ice?
Post by: Tree Toad on Jan 22, 2020, 03:02 PM
Hoping for some positive news on ice in Kent County. Did the recent rain/snow set us back? Thanks!!

I'm sure it hurt us.  I might venture out to Reeds Lake this evening with my waders on to check the ice!  If people are fishing on Gull Lake, I would think we might have some ice around here somewhere.

Gravel pits in Jenison are bad , they are flooded over from the grand and have 2 inches of honeycomb .     Isn't reeds lake a late freezer in a cold winter ?

Reeds is a no go.  Inch of ice on top.  Couple inches of slush/water under.  Then another 1/2 inch of ice below that.  Spud went through with one good whack most of the time.  Not really making much ice but not losing it either.  As long as we don't get a big snow, we could get ice, but temps aren't looking good for making ice.

It’s a bummer that we are even having a safe ice conversation on January 23 but slim to none chance you are getting out anywhere in Kent county anytime soon.  I was in Baldwin last weekend and it was iffy and then 6” of snow dumped on it. Tried A bayou by Hamlin lake Sunday and my auger spun around twice before it poked through, 1 1/2” ice not for me. Watching temps and it doesn’t look like Mother Nature is trying to help us 😫

One brave soul or fool-headed (you decide) 100 yards out from Fire Station on Reeds this AM...  Not sure on ice conditions at that spot but the ice can vary greatly on Reeds.   It's a no-go unless you SPUD all the way!  And wear your life jacket!

I heard there were people out on Murray Lake. Have been working on wabasis lake and have seen several people go to the boat launch and spud around but haven't seen anyone out. I live on a private lake and have 1 1/2" of solid ice with 4" of frozen slush on top.

There was about 20 guys on Murray when I drove by Wednesday. I doubt it will be any good by Saturday. That north end gets pounded pretty hard.

I would "think" Big Crooked would have fishable ice. It's an early/easy lake to freeze. But because of that, it gets pounded pretty good too.

There is good ice to be had. Might have to do some checking to find it tho. My lake is good to go for the year. Iv'e seen others out on other lakes but have not been on them personally to say they are safe. Always remember to spud first.
