Title: Current ice..slopfest. how long will she hold
Post by: ftwwalleye on Feb 20, 2021, 06:55 AM
I really see how all the snow impacted last few days. Getting to be some real weight on some of the lakes.  It always amazes me how if can be zero degrees and you still step thru snow and there's 2 inches of water on top of ice..ha. as many have prob already discovered you are gonna need to good waterproof boots if your out next few days. Forecast all week looking pretty warm but not sure if a cold snap after. How long you think we could hold onto this ice after the slop melts off? Be careful out there. Walked on a few lakes yesterday. Just cuz there is 7 to 10 inches of "ice" doesn't mean it is solid everywhere.
Stay dry folks

I like to ice fish. But put all my stuff away yesterday. I fish by my self. Went to a pond Wednesday that 8-9 inch’s on it last week and early this week drilled a hole and the water just boiled up turned around and left. Not worth it. I have all spring and summer. Good luck to all still going and be safe.

I'm giving it maybe a week here. I'm out on a small pond right now, sitting on 10" ice with about 2" slush over it. The slush on top is frozen up solid now, but it will be a real mess once it warms up next week and the snow starts to melt. I imagine the edges will be shot in a day or two after the meltoff begins, but the main sheets should hang on a while.

Lots of ice and snow.  I think the rain may just melt the snow and make for easier walking. I think we will be ok for a while

The extended is really gotten much worse in the past couple of days.  We're going to need a cold snap or it's not going to last as long as I thought.

Sorry guys, I bought a snowmobile!!!! ???

Its hard to say how long.  I was on a good 8” today and plenty of slush pockets to go with it. Maybe that insulating snow will work in reverse and get us through a bit of a warm up, but as others said we will need some cold to follow up.  I havent looked at the forecast for a little bit.

Probably won't even be doable by next weekend. The edges will be gone from all the melting snow.

Been there, done that... hard pass.

I'll get the boat prepped as soon as the snow melts off and start hitting the Kank when the weather turns.

Got the snowmobile out northwest of Fort Wayne tonight to retrieve some crappie and a few gills.  Public access wasn't plowed so that made it fun out of the gate.  Shuttled 2 friends about 1/2 mile across the lake, interesting ride!  Some large slush pockets out there.  No travel cover on any of our gear, what a mess and really cold.  We kept anywhere from 10-20 each.  Had a good night other than the frost bite.  Probably be the first and the last snowmobile trip this year in Indiana anyway.  Good luck out there and stay safe.  I didn't measure the ice but it is thick!

Jim,
If you haul me out somewhere do you have a rule of no nutz-to-butz..ha. I remember a younger me getting a ride home from a bar and my buddy made me ride backwards back to my house on his motorcycle.  Seems like good way to get pulled over looking back.
Hopefully you get some more use of that thing and mayebe next ice season we can try to get out on saginaw Bay. I should have a quad by then.

Dinkfest this morning, and by the time I got off the pond half an hour ago the slush on top was unfrozen again, and the snow was starting to melt a bit.

Ha. Yes. I bet if you were ripping in this stuff you would get wet. I spudded out on a lake and when it went thru top crust and hut water before ice it was spraying me. My glasses were wet and it was so cold that it all started to freeze. Perfect combo of horrible. Wet and cold. Mayebe when this melts down ill hit up some night sessions before we lose ice

Nice looking sled.  I want to upgrade mine next year.  I've been also using a quad with chains, however it doesn't handle slush real well.  once you start spinning the tires it just starts to fill the sled up... covers help, but it still seems to find a way to get in.  Let me know if you want to hit Saginaw or Erie sometime on it.  I would like to get out once more yet if this coming wind doesn't blow it all apart.

They've trended the forecast here WAY upward in the past couple days. The ice will be gone pretty quickly with daytime highs like this.

Yeah, that sucker is shooting up like a spaceX rocket!  Not good, let the rot begin.  8" of rotten ice ice much more dangerous than 3" of early ice.

I don't have my gauge out yet so I don't know an exact amount, but we got a lot of rain last night here. It knocked all the snow off my house roof, and cut it way down in the yard. I'm gonna have a look at my usual ponds after work today, and I bet the edges are gone or soft as jello. The edges were already getting kind of spongy yesterday.

We didn't get that much here but it's not good  regardless.  My try to fish Thursday if the top firms up.

I have my gear bucket, one rod, chisel, and my hand auger in the car for a final little open ice outing or two after work this week if the edges are still walkable.

It's going to take quite awhile over NE for this snow pack to melt.  Just not sure how all the water is going to affect the ice.

I think we’ll be okay for awhile. With some melting during the day and then freezing again at night it’ll give the melt so
E time to get away. I just walked out on the pond and it didn’t seem bad at all. The lake I was on yesterday actually had a double layer of slush in spots. That’s a little unnerving when your auger hits that second layer.

Quitter!  :roflmao:

I had some errands to run after work today, so I didn't fish. I'll be out tomorrow though, if the ice is still fit. It was a lot softer today, but still solid under the mushy top.

I was pleasantly surprised to find no slush or water on top of probably 10 to 12 inches of solid ice on a noble county public lake. Sure nice to stay dry while kneeling down to fish! Fish even cooperated a little but stubbornly, had to get them to come up to it by jigging it lightly then stop and hold it still for quite a while and they would whack it pretty good. Fished about two hours and ended up with 11 nice gills! Here’s the proof picture! LOL Hex

I was on Olin Yesterday Morning and when I drilled my holes I noticed there was a different feel to the ice. It was softer and even looked different .I stayed till 11:00 and by then I was breaking through the crust. I'm getting ready to tap trees so I would like to lose some of this snow. By the way had a couple of lookers but no hits. Not a good trout bite this year. Have to wait till spring.

Nice mess Hex, glad you found some!  Gonna try the midday bite tomorrow against my better judgment.   Limited time left, fat lady is warming up.

Nice batch of gills, Hex 👍

Doing the same here, RoeBoat. Gonna head straight to the pond I checked yesterday after work today and have a sit for an hour or two if I can still get out onto the ice. I typically hate fishing open ice, but it's supposed to be 44° here, so I won't have to worry about anything icing up or my hands getting cold.

Way too warm to risk sinking the fish house, so I'm just bringing minimal gear and one rod. I only ever fish one line anyway, but I typically bring a few rods with different rigs. I'll just be using a bobber over waxie tipped jig today, which has had mixed effectiveness lately, so I'm expecting a fairly low catch count.

Gotta take advantage of these last few days of ice, though. I really do expect all the local ponds around here to be ice free by the end of this week as fast as everything is melting off now.
