Has anybody fallen in on the new ice -- Yet???
« on: Nov 13, 2020, 03:40 PM »
I have been reading all the posts about finally getting out and, at times, what is being described seems a bit sketchy.

Just curious on how many might have been a little too over zealous to get out.

Where i am there is always going to be someone out when there is safe ice
So at first ice while i drill holes to check the thickness my rule is if there is nobody out there i don’t go out there
But if there isn’t people I would wait a couple nights after they fully freeze over

No ice here yet although I did get wet launching the boat.
May your tip-up spool while your flag raises with hopes of landing the big one.

My rule for first ice is to go fishing with Fat Bob and send him first.  If he sets up all his tip-ups with an issue then I generally get out of the truck and set mine up.

Good Ole Fat Bob!!

Much better than a spud.

Its a crazy magical piece of metal isn't it?  I lost one after several years of it saving my arse and it was like losing a good friend.

That said, where is there ice, I assume Minnesota?  The work from home stuff means I can be anywhere I want with a internet connection..."working"

I got up to about 10,000ft here last Wednesday and found ice. Fell thru twice on the edge checking 3 different lakes. Sank up to my knee in mud. We rarely fish deeper than 4-5fow so it's usually nothing to be to worried about. What killed it this year was the ice didn't form enough (1.5in) before it got snowed on so it is well insulated now.

Plenty of ice up here, if my back wasn’t out I’d probably be dragging out the hardside right now.  I don’t usually fall through the ice until late season when the ice starts to get rotten in current areas.  To fish my one spot the ice always stays thin due to current and there is usually open water even at -40 so I am always cautious but it does happen from time to time.  I don’t have a fat bob so if anyone wants to loan me one at the end of the season I’d appreciate it.
I was born an Alaskan I just didn't live here at the time.

Don't have a Fat Bob but I do fish with Nate(300), John(275), Big Eric(325) and a guy called Ballast who goes atleast 350. Would one of them do? Though shipping costs could get expensive. ;D ;D ;D

Sounds like you have some wonderful and valuable friends. Very fortunate gift for new ice, especially as a group. Makes fat Bob seem like a piker.

Yea great bunch to fish early and late ice with especially since I weigh 185. Unfortunately for me the guy I probably go with the most weighs like 115 so I guess that makes me his Fat Bob. ;D ;D ;D

Well, according to that video, Aaron needs a hefty new friend - perhaps someone can introduce him to Fat Bob.

I like Aaron's videos but I've never seen him using a spud...not sure why.  In any event I am glad he's ok.

I broke through a puddle that had a half inch of ice today at work. Does that count?

Walking cattails pheasant hunting and had one boot go through yesterday only about 6 inches of water no lakes with ice yet around here. But have not tried up high in the mountains just wait for ice down low so I can chase the perch and walleye around.

Me and a few buddies fell in a couple weeks ago. It was only about 3' of water. had about 2-3'' of ice. Fortunately we had waders on :)

I haven't fell through on early ice.......ever.

But if I do.....it's always close to shore by the weed lines early ice for me.

I did break through the ice once on my 4 wheeler. It was dark, and I was trying to find the boat ramp I came out of on my way out. So I was driving about 20 ft from the shore line......all of a sudden.....crack.....d ropped into 2.5ft of water. Ice was thin since warm water was shooting out under the ice from a tile line. Luckily I was able to unhook the flip over and turn the 4 wheeler where I ramped it up the ice sheet that broke under me towards thicker ice farther out. Was set up to my knees and the 10min drive back to the truck sucked........now I use GPS to find my way back vs driving along the shore line.
