A 77-year-old man's body was found in a lake in northern Wisconsin Sunday morning after not returning home from fishing the previous day.

Louis Bickel of Mason had gone ice fishing on Perch Lake in the Town of Drummond in southern Bayfield County on Saturday, according to the Bayfield County Sheriff's Office.

His wife called just after 11:15 p.m. on Saturday stating her husband hadn't returned home, the sheriff's office says.

Bayfield County deputies report they arrived at the scene discovered Bickel's vehicle, and they also found a hole in the ice about 50 yards off shore with some ice fishing equipment in and around it. The sheriff's office reports the search was postponed until the next morning due to unsafe ice conditions.

Bickel's body was discovered in about 18 feet of water at 10 a.m. on Sunday, the sheriff's office says.

The Sawyer County Dive Team, GLIFWIC (Great Lakes Indian Fish and Wildlife Commission) wardens, the GLIFWIC wind sled, and the Drummond and Namakagon Fire Department assistant the Bayfield County Sheriff's Office.

On late ice if the ice looks so bad you need to constantly test with a spud bar is it really worth it?
 First ice and yes I'm out there! Hard clear ice.

While he probably wasn't smiling, I'm sure he'd much rather go out like this than by cancer, ALS or some other debilitating disease.

A very sad situation.   My deepest sympathy to the family.  Always go out on the ice with a partner or other fishermen at your access site.  Carry around your neck a pair of spikes even if  the ice looks good.  Have a floatation device attached to a 50" rope that you or  your partner can throw to each other or other fishermen.  React quickly to recuse someone, because their  boots and suit will fill with water in a short time and pull them under.
