we should guess when we will have fishable ice!!!! im thinking its gonna be 2nd week of january sadly ha what about the rest of ya??

I'll place my marker on December 28, at 7 AM, a Friday, for anyone that weighs in at a buck 50 or less in full gear, in NJ. As for me, it will be when there is 4-6 of black ice. It will be up here in Sussex county, most likely on Steenykill or some small pond up high.

christmas on the smaller bodies of water protected from wind.got some secret holes up in the mountains that might have fishable ice before that.

haha last year i had to go upstate ner york with a buddy before we had ice here in jersey there was barely 3 inches and i weigh 170 and i thought it was sketchy but it held up just cant run for your tip ups or anything or you would have a real bad day

Here's a question, does the water come up out of the hole when a 150 guy is on two inches? Second question, does that early ice come in at a steady two inches or is it thicker/thinner depending? Because if its less, then there's got to be some real serious puckering going on or your living an exemplary life and count on the BIG GUY having your back.

Note: First ice report from Sussex county... There ain't none, stay home.

My guess would be Nov. 30,weatherpredictors say same indicators as the late 70's,anyone live through the BIG BUFFALO BLIZZARD OF 77, I did!

Good questions. Please don't ready my previous post and go out on 2" if you don't know what you are doing. I have spent a lot of time over the years watching how my first and last ice spots freeze and melt. Ice will be thinner in shallow water, over objects like weeds and rocks, over springs, at places where there is current, over deep water, and on the sunniest parts of the lake. My first ice spots are small, relatively shallow wind protected spots that freeze uniformly. I was prepared to fall in when I went on 2". There were 3 of us out there, 2 of us worked for the CT DEP and had ice safety training, and the other guy does ice rescues for the fire department. We had ice picks, ropes, life jackets, and cell phones in waterproof cases. We also stayed close to shore. We all got wet getting off the pond, but that's why I always have a change of clothes and sneakers in the car. Always know the water you are fishing and take safety precautions. If you're new to the sport and don't know how to swim well leave first ice to the nuts like me

and the water will come up through the holes and form a small pond around your tipups on thin or snow covered ice. You can feel the ice flexing and see it bouncing up and down as you approach the holes.

yeah i would never go out alone unless there was at least six inches of ice....SaxMatt are you the guy i met at oxford lake i met a few years back you took a video helping that guy that talked funny pull that monster musky on the 4 pound test rod with the daredevil spoon???

Yeah, he was jigging for perch with a small kastmaster tipped with a mousie using 6lb test line and pulled out a 40 incher. One of the sickest things I've seen on the ice. Right up there with my first 40" pike and seeing my buddy land an otter on a jigging rod.

Click on the 1st map for temperature forecasts. I'd bet, that as the temperature goes below 32 degrees for a sustained period, likely 7-10 days, that ice will form then solidify so that it increases in strength. This will happen in close proximity to the winter solstice, give or take a week or two.

If the temps keep at the pace they are at now. I wouldn't be surprised if I'm on some sort of ice in NJ by mid December. So far this winter is actually looking very promising. Keeping the fingers crossed.
