NJ Get Together Info ..
« on: Dec 23, 2009, 12:22 PM »
Well it looks like it may be a good year for ice !

It's time to start discussing this years derby (get together).

Should we do a lake we've done already or try another lake ?

As for a date we'll have to wait and see what the Ice God's has in store for us.

I really liked Aeroflex last year but I'm open to other possibilities.

I'm open to any lake as long as there's plenty of parking.

Spruce Run is also a giant dead sea in my opinion,  so it would be a lot of fishing,  not a lot of catching.  It got pike,  but panfish are hard to locate when ice fishing. .  Did better there on a boat.

Guy's we will pick a lake that has 1# a lot of parking  2# that lake will need 6 + inches of ice & bait shop's around the lake .

I'll tell you what , if this cold weather holds up our options will be greatly increased by adding some good Central Jersey Lakes into the fray! ::)

There are many lakes i can think of Lake Hopatcong is good with many bait shops in the area, Aeroflex is great, Monksville, Greenwood lake. i think hopatcong would be good on the count we would all be able to park at the state park to meet

You have my vote.  It would be my first Derby, but can't think of a better place I'd like to spend fishing it.

I like the idea of Swartswood. There's definitely plenty of parking and bait shops close to the lake. I agree Aeroflex was good last year but I wouldn't mind mixing it up. Maybe once we find a good selection of lakes that work for us all we have to do is make a yearly rotation list.

We still have time. We've done Hopatcong and Aeroflex so now we can discuss another. If conditions allow maybe we can do a lake further south. If so we'll have to call on Reb for some help with that.  ;)
I personally like the idea of trying different lakes as it just opens more possibilities for all of us.

I'm just getting started with fishing but would love to join in.  When is the derby?  Is it the same weekend every year?

I like Wizzofd's idea of Oxford Furnace if its safe enough.... Tons of parking and you got Hi-Way sport shop right on rt 31 and you can fish anywhere on it and be within walking distance to any weigh/measurment station.

Yes it is off of 521 I dont know any bait shops there either. I only went there twice last year and it was horrible maybe bad days I guess I did see one guy catch a 20 inch bow when I was there. Only fish caught by anyone there. Swartswood is loaded with good perch and is also stocked with trout and walleye. Never got a walleye but hope to find them in there. They netted a 13 pounder out of there a few years ago. But whatever is decided by the masses I am in.

I'm in for this year. Hopatcong would be nice but the parking would be an issue. I would think Swartswood or Furnace would be good. Both have some good jigging and also both have some bruisers for tip ups. If there is a lot of people then I think Furnace may be a little jammed and Swartswood would have more than enough room. Also can this thing happen on a Sunday because with tax season coming up my Saturdays are shot. :'(

Split Rock is a hump and a half out in the bush, as long as names are getting tossed out. Parking is OK, but nothing to write home about.

Lake Musconetcong has plenty of parking all around the lake. Fishing for all species is usually very good. Hardly ever get skunked even on bad days. There's a bait shop right there that opens 5:30am almost everyday. (Closed Mondays) Bait and Boat, next to the Hess station. They have great healthy bait, lures, ice fishing equipment. They are also the major supplier of bait to most all the tackle shops in the state. Their turnover never stops all year. The lake is easy to find and easy to get to. The ice stays safe when most lakes get iffy.

We fish Split Rock in the open water - but always use lures.  Are there any bait shops near there?
