If I recall correctly, the last time Round Valley froze and had safe ice was 2004. Prior to that I think 1994 had safe ice as well.

I was the first one ever to catch a fish through the ice at Round Valley. This was about 35 years ago. It was the first time the lake ever had some ice on it. Two rainbows in five minutes just outside the boat ramp cove. I walked out to the ice edge on 2 1/2" of ice. The rest of the lake was open water. I was using a silver swedish pimple with mousees. Two drops, two fish in one hole. A park police officer asked me politely (from the shore line) to cease fishing.
Then I was thrown off the swimming area by a ranger. No one ever ice fished it before so they were not use to seeing a body standing on the ice. I went into the office and finally convinced a captain that I was safe on 6" of ice.  I had the place all to myself for years. A friend of mine enjoyed catching all those big bass with me. I have some great pictures as proof. On occasion, I still had park police question me and check out the ice.
Twenty five years ago we fished the south tower cove where the campers put in. We caught 15-20 trout a day. All with RVTA tags in their mouths. They had stocked the area before the ice formed.  There were 15 fishermen a day hauling in trout on tip-ups. It was the wildest trout fishing ever. -Cuzn-

this year would have been the year to freeze if the wind would have stayed down.  :-\  it was very cold for many days in a row

Heres the picture of me on Round Valley in the Hunterdon County Democrat Newspaper.  Dated February 6, 2003

the guy from the democrat took this picture standing on the dirt ramp, looking towards the rocks that divide the swim area from the reservoir

So it was 2003 when we had last ice on Round Valley. I remember stepping into a 10" hole and all my gear went flying accross the ice. Boy, was I hot! Would like to put a few lakers on the ice.

Jigmeister- i was out there in 2003 AND 2004

maybe i will try it out tomorrow, a little part of the cove is frozen between the two ramps. might try in the morning before it gets too warm/windy and breaks up.  i'll definatley be carrying my picks  :cookoo:

I would probably not reccomend it unless you are really certain that the ice is thick enough.  It gets very windy there and even the cove is 20-50 feet deep.

Fishin Hard Water

Thanks for clearing that up. I was certain I was on the ice in 2004 not 2003. So we had fishable ice parts of two seasons.

Did anyone go out on RV yesterday?? If there was ice, I doubt its gonna survive these strong warm winds with all that open water. Its too bad-if it had stayed real cold for another week there could have been some decent trout fishing in the cove.

I'm gonna take my boat out thursday here. I live about 5 minutes from RV. There is no way there is going to be safe ice on the boat launch cove this year, especially after this week.  Everything pretty much melted today.  Weather says the whole week is gonna be above 40 even 50.  If you have a boat, take it out because your probably gonna see some good fishing here this week!

Wow-you guys are braver than me!  How thick was the ice?  What did the trout take and where in the water column.  The cove can be hit or miss in open water for trout so it looks like ice fishing it is more productive!

It's Mark, Slim's boy.  I got the picture of the Crappie, what else did you get on Pompton Lake.  And I haven't forgotten you, I'll email Slim the pics from Hopatcong and Furnace Lake.  They're on the computer at my Lady friend's house and she's been staying by me for the last couple weeks.  I'll make sure you get 'em.

Hey Mark, thought it was you-e-mail them directly if you want [email protected]

Being the only martalus family in the country, I have dominance over the name as far as internet stuff goes!

Depending on conditions, we are probably gonna go somewhere icefishing this weekend if the ice holds, maybe Pompton lake, maybe up by High point where its colder.  what day if any are you available?

We ended up getting about a dozen small perch and some decent crappie jigging on Sat at pompton lake.  We helped the guys next to us land a 30 inch pike on a tip up-they also got several 20-25 inch pickerel.  We didnt use tip ups cos we didnt have time to get bait.
