Title: Best Rods for Trout
Post by: CaptHoss on Feb 08, 2019, 02:46 PM
I'm from Montana and the predominant species in my area is trout most are 10"-20" but there are some real hogs.  I fish a lot of different ways, spoons, raps, dead sticks, and finesse plastics mostly.  I am curious about some specific rod choices for trout in my area, something versatile as I don't want to drop a bunch of money on multiple specialty rods.  I like a light tip, maybe L or ML rods. 13 Fishing? TUCR?  St. Croix? Thanks just looking to talk rods

I like and recommend the Ugly Stik GX2 in 53" (4 ft 6 in) size.  Model USSP461UL.

Short enough to be manageable, long enough to aid in fighting a large trout, good action, durable rod.  If i wished for anything different it would be larger guides toward the tip.

Not sure what a lot of money is.   I just bought myself a light action 38" tickle stick for Christmas. The tip is very light (Kind of like a built in spring bobber) and the rod has nice back bone.   Haven't used it yet, but should handle 20inchers with the occasional hog.

Everyone will have an opinion because everyone will have a preference to how they fish.

I’m in Idaho and have been researching this topic to death, I am probably going to drop the hammer on a 34” Thorne Bros Deadstick. I seem to like the finesse of the smaller sticks for jigging but want something more robust for a deadstick option. I’m ready to chase some big Mackinaw so I’ll be following this thread.

I just picked up a Berkeley Amped ice rod, it's medium with a fast tip. Has a nice feel for light bites, but handles larger fish nicely.

Did you get the 32” also what size reel are you running, that looks like a heck of a deal on the Berkley

I went with the 38". I put a eagle claw reel I found at Blaine's fleet and farm on one and a frabill Sub zero on the other one.
