Howdy, I am new to Iceshanty and noticed your old post. I spent the first 30 years of my life in Maine and remeber smacking yellow perch off the side of the boat while pursuing white perch. I think it was the fact that the white perch had a nicer filet that made the yellow perch a trash fish plus I think due to the warmer water the yellowperch tended to be a little wormy later in the season.I have eaten yellow perch here in Montana and they are redicuoulsy deliclicous. Hope you are loving Montana as much as we are and hope to meet you on the  ice someday! Be Well!
no the taste like !!!@ so if you catch alot of them clean and pack in dry ice send them to montana and I will personally dispose of them into some peanut oil that i just happen to have

Boy the way Glenn Miller played
Songs that made the hit parade.
Guys like us we had it made,
Those were the days.

And you knew who you were then,
Girls were girls and men were men,
Mister we could use a man
Like Herbert Hoover again.

Didn't need no welfare state,
Everybody pulled his weight.
Gee our old LaSalle ran great.
Those were the days

I've seen your pics, you should be giving them.   I'd take a lesson but I'm a slow learner so you'd have to teach me three or four times!

I don't call people's spots out if I think I know them so hopefully no offense on the hmmmmmm thing.

Should have stayed out of it.

Good luck fishing gents, I just got back from Crooked Creek late last night and barely got out of there.   There is definitely people stuck in there, it was drifting bad when we came out and wouldn't have made it if we had waited an hour or two later.

Posted this on the Smith Lake reports thread but I'll stick it here too because it's a Montana ice fishing pic. Here is the story :) I have a bunch of step kids but only two biological kids and they live with their mother in western Washington and only get to come out to Montana in the summers and on Christmas and Spring break etc. Every other weekend I drive over to a town in Eastern Oregon and have them there but this year marks the first year where they have been able to come stay with us during the Christmas break so they have never ice fished before. They have also never seen perch or pike before. Their fishing experience has been limited to open water trout, salmon and small mouth fishing because I take them fishing there in Oregon a lot on the weekends I have them. They absolutely love fishing so they were super excited to go ice fishing here for the first time and to get to hopefully catch perch and pike for the first time as well. It's all they talked about for weeks leading up to coming out. So for our first trip I took them up to Upper Thompson lake to perch fish. We caught five or six keepers and it was fun and they enjoyed it but the action wasn't exactly jumping so they ended up just playing a lot. Then the following day I took them out to Smith lake and they had a lot more fun there. We caught eleven pike but the best part was my son's first ever pike through the ice was this one:

Thanks, we had a lot of fun. Her "biggest" one was about the length of her index finger. The minnow she was using for bait was bigger than than the slimer was.  ;D :icefish:

Sweet! Taking the kids is what it's all about! Nothing more fun than watching kids catch a bunch of fish and have fun outside with their parents.

Hello   ;D  New here and thought I'd share a couple pics of my New Year's day pike.  Was fishing Noxin Res w/ a bud and had 3 tip-ups out and one rod to jig for perch to keep from freezing (4rods/2guys=legal).  Had some action on the tip ups, and was catching a few nice perch when my perch rod got real heavy.  Fought this old girl for 1/2hr before we even got a peek at her.  Was super impressed that the 4lb line held up to the abuse.  Had to completely submerge the rod a time or two when she went on horizontal runs, but it was worth the cold hands.. ;D  She was right at 20lbs.

Weighed her 4 times on a digital...got from 19 to 21lbs...  Seems these kind of pics/claims always get disputed.  I don't want to argue or fight about it.  Believe what you want.  I'm over 6'2" tall if that's any reference for you.  She was just under 40", fat as a pig, w/ a full belly...

I hope you put that one back to make more pike that size. Too many ppl keep them just to kill them. Nice fish tho
