Hey Guys,
I don't spear, but it sure does intrigue me. I would love to try it someday. Please post some pictures of your catches, I would love to see what you guys do!!

Nice Fish, hey is that rod what you use for your decoys cause if it is than maybe you should try and put a few trebles on there for the ones that grab the decoys  " if you can't spear em than fish em" :woot:

Yes, I use the rod to work the deke. I've been trying to make a decoy with hooks for a while now, with limited success. Hard to make one where metal fins don't get in the way of a clean hook-up. Am still workin on it tho, as it's legal to use hooks in Alaska while spearing. I also have a spoon with a herring on it nearby, either in the hole, or ready to drop down in case of a smash, grab, and run. Sometimes I've been able to coax 'em back in with the herring, and drop the spear, and a couple times, hook 'em and reel 'em in. Like ya said, double jeapordy.
-
nice pike there guys!
-
Just thought this was kinda interesting, and goes a way toward proving my theory pike don't know how big they are, and will try to eat anything they think they can catch, this one was taken with 10 or so others all about the same size. We were thinking they were all about the same size because they'd gotten big enough that they couldn't eat each other anymore, but I guess it doesn't mean they won't try :o.....

what is the closest state to Maine that you can spear pike.. This is way better then setting traps.

This question was asked last year also:
http://www.iceshanty.com/ice_fishing/index.php?topic=79216.0 (http://www.iceshanty.com/ice_fishing/index.php?topic=79216.0)
Some states do not allow spearing for pike, but you are allowed to spear "trash fish". Check w/ your local Department of Fish and Game, they can steer you in the right direction.

Sorry but I can't find a state near you that allows Spearing in the winter, But I will still keep looking for ya.
I did find this:

Looks like the spear is leathal enough, how many do ya need? :cookoo:
-
Looks like the spear is leathal enough, how many do ya need? :cookoo:
The mess of fish in the picture were taken from a lake in South-Central Alaska, where they are non-native, and were illegally introduced. There is no limit on pike there and ADF&G encourages removal of as many as possible, but they must be used and not wasted. They are discussing rotenone as a measure to reduce non-native populations, and already have used it on some lakes in the Anchorage Metro area, now that is a waste. I can assure you, all of the fish pictured were enjoyed after being dipped in beer batter and a hot oil bath :)

Guess you've never dozed off and woke up just as a pike was nailing your decoy and taking off like a bullet, never to be seen again, lol.

I'm pretty sure I have as many hours looking thru the ice as anyone here. My point is, 12 fish in one outing, I just don't think you need to augment the decoy with hooks to snag a few more. You're in target rich water where a spear alone will get you more fish than you could ever need.

Here in South Central Alaska pike are not native and were introduced illegally. Alaska Fish and Game wants them eradicated from all the lakes before they wipe out the native fish, mostly salmon, polulations. So here we consider a dozen pike just a "good start".
Here's a link that talks about the problem pike:

How would that be snagging :-\ If the fish hits the decoy then it's pretty much just like fishing with a hook and line ;)2 It makes more sense to have hooks than not have hooks but it is true that most decoys don't have hooks but that's only because the line is normally not connected to a fishing pole but in this case the decoy is on a fishing pole line so WHY NOT ???
-
I vote for hooks on the decoy :woot: :woot:

You guys get pretty wound up when someone says something here that you don't agree with or don't take the time to read the post close enough to understand the point. Bigporchmonkey said he didn't think spearing was the sport and disagreed with it. You guys (especially you Higgans) contribuited to a 4 pages of argument among yourselves defending the sport and hammering him. Let it go, it's just his opinion.
I said "Looks like the spear is leathal enough, how many do ya need?" 12 pike in 1 outing is a lot of fish. If you get 12 in a day, you are probably going get as many as you could ever need on almost any day. Let it go...
-
Hey Guys, didn't mean to start a ruckus! I have to admit, in all the years I've been staring down the hole, I'd never seen more than 4 in one day, before or since. True, the spear was lethal enough that day. My obsession with a hooked decoy goes back to the days of my youth in Minnesota, when hooked decoys were unlawful, and I spent many a day frustrated by the "smash & runs" and never got a shot. Again, I can assure you, though some fish were harmed in the making of this picture, none were wasted. So no hard feelings eh?
This thread is about pics of fish, so back on topic: A 10.5lber (The only one I saw that day :))

Yeah this could go on and on. If you don't want hooks on your decoy, that's fine, don't put them on there. If you do want them, more power to you. To each his own.

Made it out today, Darkhouse Jr. went with Mrs Darkhouse to play with some of his friends so I had the shack all to myself. Felt weird to talk to myself without hearing, "Daddy who you talking to?"
Got this one, only about 24 inches long, but it was real fat....and delicious. ;D

Some shots from this past weekend. Fishing was fair, only 5 in the darkhouse, between two of us spearing, and a few more on flags between the three of us out that day. Was a little cooler than we had expected, but was sure a pretty day to be out!

Now your really starting to pis me off "Buschwhacker".......First off you live in Alaska and I can only hope to visit it once in my life time and you live there and get to fish it any time :%$#!: I can't even spear right now because of no safe ice and I'm sure you are up to your elbows in ice. Then I post a pic of some little gills in the tummy of a 28" pike and then you come along and post a pic of what looks to be the size of my pike in side of your pike :-\ (and "DARKHOUSEFISHER" you don't help my confidence either because it looks like your boy is seeing more spearing action then I do in a week :-[ .......Just venting and as for your boy I'm glad that your passing on the great sport of spearing)
I must say I truly am jealous of you Alaska boys but the posting above is just me venting and "PLEASE" don't take it as me jumping all over ya  I just hope you know what you have because some of your posts would be a dream here in Michigan (I'm not saying that I don't have real good days but my good days are probably your normal days) ;D
At least one of us is sticking them

Hey Higgins, Before ya get too jealous, Look at the WHOPPER I got today :o ;D. Got him on the old faithful Flo. Orange and White in the pic. (The 'bow deke is just for size comparison). Lil' bugger zoomed in, grabbed hold and shook the snot out the deke for a bit then let go and just sat there, up to that point, I wasn't sure who'd won, deke or fish :D. Dropped the "Black Death" on him, center tine! Not much margin for error (luck :)) there!
Then again, it's not all bad, I'm entered in a local pike derby, $250.00 for shortest fish, I could be a... CONTENDER! ;D.
And Higgins, if ya ever make your trip of a lifetime up here, winter or summer, be sure and look us up, we'll get ya "HOOKED" up with something for sure!!

Center tine....now that's what I call marksmanship!!!!
I speared one that size one time also. I told Whatpole that it was making a run at my sandwich, but I don't think he believed me. ;D

BuschWhacker and I made it out today. The weather was real nice......dragging the sleds through a foot of fresh snow wasn't real nice :-\
BuschWhacker nailed another HOG. I'm not as good of a shot, I tried to spear one about the same size, but it went between the tines ;D.

Geez, I'll bet with the 25% magnification by the water that thing must have looked like an alligator moving into the hole. Based on the spear marks it appears you made sure those barbs weren't going to come loose. ;D Congrats. Nothing more adrenalin pumping than to see a fish nose up to the decoy and over half of its body is still out under the ice.

Will this site host picts or do I have to post them somewhere else?
I'm not sure how good you are with computers but I have intructions on my computer on how to post pics, so here they are.
Here is how ya post pics
First make sure that you have a picture loaded on to your computer in a file
1.Then go to this web site: http://photobucket.com/ (http://photobucket.com/)
2.Then sign up for an account on the site (it's free)
3.Then make sure you are signed in and you will see a small screen that says "Upload Images & Video" and under that there will be a blue box that says
"choose file" CLICK on that blue box and a small screen will pop up from your computer that says "select files to upload" and then you need to find the file
that your picture is on and click OPEN (WAIT FOR A FEW SECONDS TO LET IT LOAD)
4. OK now step #3 will send your picture to your account on Photobucket.com
5. Then when you see your picture on Photobucket.com you need to CLICK where it says "save and continue"
6.Now you will be looking at your picture in a smaller forum and all you need to do is put the mouse pointer over the picture and a small window will slide down.
7.When that small window slides down you need to LEFT CLICK (left click is the normal click that you do on the computer, DON'T RIGHT CLICK) on where
it says "LINK OPTIONS" then a screen will pop up and then look at where it says IMG for bulletin boards & forums then left click under it on the part that says "http://" and then when it becomes high lighted "RIGHT CLICK" on the http:// again and left click "COPY"
8. Now just go to where you want the picture posted and left click the little Icon above the smiley faces that looks like a picture of sky, trees, and sand, then when you see something that looks like this [img][img] you need to right click in between these 2 symbols>>>>>> [img] and click where it says "COPY". NOW JUST CLICK "POST" and you got a picture posted ;D
That's how you post a Picture, I hope that helps
If you get confused just send me a PM and I can help ya

Got another nice one today 34" and she came in quick and grabbed my sucker decoy and shook a few times then dropped it and started to leave and I had to throw the spear on a angle but I stuck her good ;D
(http://i446.photobucket.com/albums/qq188/Higgins24/100_2766.jpg)

awesome man. A friend of mine had that happen last weekend. It crashed in mouth open, grabbed the live sucker sideways in it's mouth. He grabbed the line and it did a full lap around the hole. as he brought it back around it spit out the sucker and hovered for a second and he nailed it. Very intense.
I had it happen 2 years ago where my live decoy had went under me and I couldn't see it for awhile and then all of a sudden I seen the decoy coming out side ways and behind him was a nice 32"er that had the sucker in his mouth and was jugging away quick and so I threw the spear and some how he must have let go because I pulled him up and the decoy was still fine. But this time it was even better because she grabbed hold of my Wooden sucker that I made and then when she found that it was too hard for her liking she spit it out and payed the price :woot:
-
   Very nice! Don't ya just love it when the plan comes together?!?!?!! You've got me by 28" or so this year, who's jealous now?? ;D
-
Once again, Way to go Higgins!!!!
-
I had my cuz out with me today and it was his first time spearing and he missed a nice one that was in the range of 35 + inches (heck I was switching out the decoy so there wasn't a decoy in the water when he came in). Then about an hour later I looked in the back of the hole and seen a big shovel nose come in and I told my cuz to get him and he tried telling me that it was a bass and then he made me look twice and I told him there was no way that's a bass and he told me again and then I knew we where not seeing the same fish so I grabbed the spear and started lowering it into the water and then just before I threw it I heard him say "O I SEE HIM", but by then I had grabbed the rope and started bringing this nice one up (I feel bad but at the same time it was either I throw the spear or the fish swims off)
35"
-
35"
Man! You're rackin' up the score now, I was skunked yesterday :(. Keep after it, way to go!
-
Nice job Higgins. Sounds like a great time. I had a decent weekend also. I missed a nice one Fri. he lunged for my decoy at exactly the same instant I let the spear fly. Grabbed it and pulled it off. clean miss. I then speared a 26" with 2 buddies with me. on Sat. and had a 23-24" come in tonight that I let "grow". I took a pic of him staring a the deke, but it didn't turn out very well. Very fun weekend.
Yeah I think this last one I got might have went for the decoy when I threw the spear cause I got him kinda far back (I need a excuse cause I was ragging on my dad just a few days ago because of a hit he made ;D ) That's good that it was a clean miss though and it's always fun when you have some body in the spearing shanty with you, it just makes things more fun. I'm also trying to get some pictures of nice pike in the hole but I'm scared of dropping a pricey tech toy down the hole :-\
Good luck to ya and keep them tines wet ;)

Now that will make a pile of fish fillets. Definitely was worth getting up for this morning!! Nice markings on the big gal.
-
Funny stuff, the classic just 5 more minutes...
Then WHAM she came in and DEVOURED the decoy....I yelled, "You SOB" and yanked on the line. She spit it out and took off in a flash it was over in 3 seconds.
Two minutes later, here she comes sneaking into the hole! She came in right on the decoy and I saw her nose back under the hole so I was ready for her this time! Might be bigger than 10...my little DeLiar may not be accurate.
Cleaned her up, deboned it, three zip lock bags. Two neighbors have been wanting some fish and some to my mom.
-
Very nice Redruff  (what state are you spearing out of ??? )

Somebody has the honey hole geez!

Betterlabs, those are nice fish. But, why not let some of those medium sized one swim away. Don't get me wrong, I love to spear as much as anyone, but five fish over 30" in a little over a week?
-
Hey, I am just jealous I am not getting any! If your eating them I see nothing wrong with it. I certainly try to limit on ducks during that season.

"YOU GOT TO GET WHILE THE GETINGS GOOD, CAUSE IT'S NOT ALWAYS GOING TO BE THIS GOOD" As long as your on a good size lake and your eating the fish than that's all that matters ;D

There you go Higgins. Nice fish. Did you get em tonight after the storm? I wondered how the fish were moving.
Nope I hit the big one and my dad got the smaller one last week......I haven't been doing as good as last year but between the 3 shanty's we have seen about 25 and have only hit 5 due to inexperience and other problems but I'm not worried cause all 3 shanty's are moved and in better spots so it's just a matter of time cause I'm pretty sure that I have them all dialed in.
-
Here is one hit just this morning, 34.5"

Agreed. These fish are coming from different spots too. Just gotta know what to look for. My recipe for success is a deep lake (over 60 feet for a cool thermocline in the summer) with a high quality forage species, and a tributary with good spawing habitat.
Funny thing is, in most of these spots, I do not see huge numbers or short fish. These are big fish haunts.
I also go out and cut my holes and set up hours before I fish (if possible). I then sneak in and set up quietly. That way, I'm fishing prime time the minute I sit down, rather than having spooked every pike within 500 yards. I also only fish out of portables. Permanent shacks around here draw every fisherman and their cousin too them, and are VOID of big fish. Another thing, I won't set a tip up even if you paid me (unless I have no plan on spearing and am scouting).
Put those things together, add a little patience and a whole lot of confidence, and that equals a big fish on the ice!

I finding this is the best way too, you described my big fish lake, but water was clear only one week this year, normally clear to 20-30'. trout, suckers and carp, its 58' deep

Possibly the best advise ever given on the darkhouse page... You the man JCrean
Yeah right. A man is only as good as the weapon he wields, and thus is only as good as the maker of said weapon... ;D

went out to test my new spear I just forged for 1 1/2 hours, the welds were still warm and weren't even cleaned up, but I love this spear.

Great scores and hits guys!
-
Great picts guys, congrats on all the speared fish. ;D
Here in SK. it's illegal to spear fish like you guys are doing, only underwater spear fishing allowed. :-\
It does look fun and challenging way to fish. @)
Do you guys actually throw the spears or do you more or less place it above the fish and drop it?
I guess it would depend on water clarity, but what's the deepest water you guys spear fish in?
What is a normal spearing depth for you? ???

For me 10 to 12 feet of water is ideal, but if it is a really clear lake 20 FoW + is not out of the question, you just need to get the pike to come up off the bottom. We use egg shells to help see bottom, heard of people using cut potatoes as well. Pike are so fast, you have to throw the spear...Check out the Dark House Spearing videos on youtube if you want some entertainment...

First fish on ice 2013. Lost a nice 30" or so a few days earlier. Great shot behind head. I had her on top of the ice in the corner of the shanty. Went to open the door, she thrashed around and I only had one hand on the spear. Flipped into the water, thrashed some more and then broke lose :'( Hopefully she made it.

To bad you lost the pike, if you had bigger barbs that wouldn't happen, lol!
Nice job on the dog!
-
Yeah. If I would have just held him in place on the ice for a bit and let him calm down :-\ I will be making some modifications to one of the spears I have.

He's a nice eater a friend of mine Dean Botek got yesterday with one of my decoys and one of Blackhawks spears!

Heck yeah! I was out tonight on one of my favored lakes and had two hammer handles come in at sunset. Things were slow and I noticed they came in while the decoy was stationary. Realizing they weren't fish I would bring home, I tried giving the decoy a swim and in a flash both occasions they were gone! It may have been if I was working the decoys aggressively I may not have seen any at all. :o Lessons learned @)

Came in within 15 minutes after setting up. 35" on one of Jason's red and white decoys. Passed through on a corner, then came in directly below me, nose to the decoy. Great hit, directly behind the head.

Also had a hammer handle come into the Bluegill decoy Jason made. I got some great video of him but it's too long to send via video message. Will have to upload directly to laptop soon.

You know, I wanted to! I really did! But I was alone and had to set up my phone and stabilize it for a timed photo. I would of had to drag the decoy out and pole from the shanty. Next time I will! Here is the first picture I took, fresh out of the water

Whats a Hardwater Hardware spear?
-
"Hardwater Hardware, LLC" is based out of Victor, Montana. You will not find them on the internet since the guy that makes the spears still has a full time job and tries not to have excessive spear business. It's about a 2-3 week turn-a-round time on a spear order right now. Their number is 406-642-6689.

Last ice, last year. Put Highball in my best spot and scouted an area I never fished before. Bottom looked terrible. I walked back to his shack an hour later with these... LOL!

Went out with a friend and his son to the spear shack. Moved locations on lake before first light to and tried and true location. Started seeing fish around 8:30 First a sub legal came in and smashed the deke. The second was 25"-28" size that never offered a poke. Third fish came through and was legal but took a look at our jigging spoon, made a swipe, then left. The fourth was over thirty and my friend missed. I took over the ropes from there and finally connected with a 27", 4lb. Red and white was our main color today. One fish came in on Jason M's decoy, the others liked the aggressive jigging action of a red and white with chrome backed spoon. Packed up at 10:30 for family plans but would have loved to stay all day!

Had the day off work and for the most part sat in the shack. Caught a half dozen shorts on tipups in the a.m. with one legal fish at 26" then had a friend missing a 27"ish with the spear. Went in and cleaned fish, ate lunch headed back out and I took the ropes over. Had this sexy 33.5" 8.5lb appear from under our feet to a red and white deke. Shortly after friend finally connected with a 26" 3.5lb. Great day on the ice! Here is some footage of a sub legal playing with the jigging spoon and my friend Dans 26". Unfortunately I was unable to get footage of the 33.5" Things happened too quickly!

It has been about four years since I last spearhead a northern. Glad to see I still have the touch!!! She wasn't the biggest, but it was the BEST shot I've ever had. 10' of water and she came in 2' of the bottom.
