Title: Jiffy gas tank leak
Post by: kb on Dec 05, 2010, 09:04 PM
Jiffy Lite model 50/T

I have a leak where my fuel line passes through the bottom of the gas tank.  The line is tight on the spigot, but it seems that is leaks around the hose.  Any ideas how to plug the leak?

Thanks

I have the same problem on my Legend Lightning XT, it's also losing it's prime very easily.

If it is like mine, there is a filter up inside of tank and the nossle sticks out the bottom through a hole. It all seals up on the outside of the hose. You should be able to reach down through the gas filler hole with a pliers and pull that filter out from the inside. Replace the fuel line with a new piece of TYGON fuel line and you should be up and running again. TYGON by far works best to repair this problem.

I just looked in my tool box and I still have a chunk of it for next time... ::)

I cant find a size printed on the hose, but it says TYGON and it is yellow in color. Bring the old piece to the parts store for size. DO NOT use the cheap clear vinyl tubing, I tried that once and it was leaking again in a few weeks. I used the good tygon tubing last time and it is still good after two seasons.

Good Luck!

The fuel line that I have is a yellow silicone like line.  Im not sure if it is TYGON or not.  I got it from a small engine repair shop.  Ill have to check, but it still leaks.  It is a poor design IMHO.

If it is yellow and feels like silicone, it is either tygon or something very similar to it. Yes, it is a bad design for sure!!

I took my line off tonight, going to go hunt around some motorcycle shops and small engine repair shops for some fuel line tomorrow.

I am curious if a fuel return line clamp off a diesel injector might seal it up better, not sure if the diameter is right, looks close, but I'm thinking this line is smaller, I'll have to check.

I found some Tygon, it was pretty easy to pick up.  The first small engine repair shop I called had some.  I can't recall the size off of the top of my head, but it was metric.  It was slightly bigger than the standard 3/16ths.  It went on really tight, no leaks, primes much easier and holds it for some time too.

Thanks a lot Skipper!!!   ;D ;D
