Title: Fishing Upsata Lake
Post by: icefisherman taxi on Feb 01, 2018, 06:27 PM
My husband is visually impaired from Vietnam so I drive him around to ice fish. We are fairly new to MT the last few years and trying to find places for perch near Missoula. Found Upsata Lake but don't anything about it. Fish closer to parking lot or go south, east or west side. Any info would be helpful. He would be pulling his sled.

Fished Upsata for the first time last weekend and did pretty good on the perch in about 8 ft of water.  We fished the west shore and it was quite a walk to get out of the bay but there was people fishing all over the lake (not sure how they did).  Tell ya what though if your looking for a really easy and close place around Missoula with perch then frechtown pond is great.  Its a really short walk with loads of perch.  I've taken my daughter twice in the past few days and its non stop fish mostly little perch with the occasional sun fish and there is some really nice trout.

I bet you can catch perch 100 yards from the Upsata boat launch.... remember bass have to be released. You can also catch all the 6” perch you could ever want out of harpers with a rare fish over 8” occasionally.

I've never tried fishing right off the launch at upsata. I have fished the rest of the lake. If you get out to the first bay just past the weeds you will catch all the perch you could ever want.

Be aware that the lake is very shallow for the first few hundred yards off the launch. Not saying the perch won't be there, but it's only like 3-5 feet deep until you get out past the cattails. That has been my experience, anyways. That being said, I haven't fished Upsata in two years because of all the fishing pressure it gets now. Tough to find a parking spot most days!

There was no one there yesterday and saw no tracks in the snow so don't know if it's been fished lately.

Get past those cattails and its perch city. Have pulled a handful of pike from the deeper channel, but they were not more than 18 inches.

I would imagine that Upsata would be pretty slushy after this weather.

Yup, it was starting to slush up pretty good before all this spring weather moved back in.
