lake of the woods
« on: Dec 13, 2009, 08:55 PM »
Hi! around christmas I will be going up to lake of the woods ice fishing.  I mostly do crappie fishing in the winter so I don't own much walleye tackle.  what are some jigs/lures I should buy before going up there? (the target will be walleye)

You lucky dog! fishin should still be very good at that time. I usually get up there a few times a winter and over the years our group has had the best luck on buck-shot rattle spoons, angel eyes, and anything that is gold or glow red. We usually jig with 1 rod and have 1 dead rod. Jiggin usually outfishes the dead rod. Another thing to do is to ask the resort owner, there always willing to help to get you fish and to get you to come back. Hope this helps and have a blast!

There are some nice crappies up there. I wouldn't miss the chance for the multi species bite.

Well, I just got back from lake of the woods last night.  The fishing was very slow on monday.  with a group of 20, we only were able to get 12 keepers and most of them were pretty small saugers.  The walleyes we caught were all pretty nice.  On tuesday, the fishing was alot better than on monday.  I ended up with my limit of walleyes and saugers as long as catching a 20.5 inch walleye that I had to release and we also almost got about a 10lb eelpout.  The others in the group did pretty good too.  Thanks for the info guys!

Hope you enjoyed the time up in the Northland!

Wondering if anyone has bait suggestions...we stay at 1 of the local resorts and they supply minnows.  They are typically on the smaller size, wondering if we should be using something different?  Any suggestions.....
