Sons first lake trout

I dont typically like to ask for information other than conditions but my son got a sonar for Christmas and is bound and determined to catch his first laker with it thru the ice. We live in western ny and it doesn't look like the ice is gonna get there on any of our local lake trout lakes. Just wondering what would be a good lake to head to this weekend where we have a really good shot at catching a lake trout with decent access with no atv. Keeper trout are not an issue. I just want him to hook up with one. I have been reading about Piseco or Seventh lakes. Any info would be awesome. Thanks!

I am not sure how far out laker territory is on this lake but Simcoe in Canada has been doing good things this year for whitefish and Lakers. Plenty of safe ice as well as big laker potential.

Seventh lake is a great option especially if keeper size is not your main focus. Put some tip ups out with shiners on them, you'll locate a hot hole within about 20 minutes of setting up. Pull the tip up out and throw down a jig, your son will catch dozens of Lakers all day.

Awesome Sheesh, I have an eight year old who loves to fish and hunt. This year he is figuring out the fish finder thing.  I don't know a lot about that area and don't have a lot of laker experience down here in southern N.Y. The best help I can offer is to say good luck and have fun!

Thank you. My son is nine. Last year he got into it big time. I think he was more excited for ice than I was this year. And then of course now we are having a crappy winter. Oh well. Just have to drive further north. I think we're gonna try on Sunday or Monday.

Two weekends ago I camped out on the North shore.  Caught a few dozen 15-18in Lakers in 25-30 foot of water, 18" or so off bottom.  Tipups with hunts and jigging w/ white tube (medium size).  Too easy.  Small Lakers but fun nonetheless. Good luck.
