To tip or not to tip?
« on: Dec 05, 2012, 08:09 AM »
When jigging raps for walleye, do you prefer to tip the lure with a piece of shiner or fish it "naked". For those of you who do not tip, do you use some sort of scent/attractant?

The last couple of years I've quit using bait some much. Most of the time with a rap no bait. The big thing with a jigging raps if to to jiggle and raise the bait away from the fish and see how they react. If they don't follow then you need to quiver in place. I guess what I'm trying to describe is don't let the fish have a good look at the bait. It's a game just figuring out what works for a day.

I always start with no bait but if I'm not getting any bites I usually put a minnow head on the hanging treble.  Try it all!! The fish will tell you what they want... :)

Ok so most start bare. What about a scent/attractant?  Do you use one and if so what?

if you want to be thorough on the ice, start with a bare lure....if the fish dont respond to all presentations that way, try tipping with a minnow head or even a few waxies...if nothin after that you can give scent a try... but remember, if you're not fishing with electronics to tell you how the fish are responding, you aren't accomplishing much.

Same here, I start with no bait on a jigging rap.  BTW, I think walleye in LBDN had seen way too many Jigging Raps last year due that it had so much ice compared to Southern MI/WI and IL. As well, I'm sold on using my x68c for ice fishing, won't leave home without it!

i think you guys are right about the bays de noc... however it is hard to argue success.  raps catch a lot of fish (tho i know they're used heavily) so i always try them too.  but tipups are still productive, and i will be trying a lot of different approaches while jigging for eyes and perch

Never tip but have found pro-cure minnow scent to help, another thing I do if they wont take the one I am offing is to change size up or down, I typically use #3 and #5 jigging raps

Do you guys use snaps on the Raps or do you direct tie. Always worried that I pike is going to take off with the lure. Also do you have issues with walleye bite off if you direct tie?

I guess I (we) are in the minority.  My buddies and I always tip with a minnow head. Couple of buddies really like using a full fat head (through the lips) on the center treble.  We rarely don't tip and when we do the fish don't seem to bite as much.  But like others said it is the fish that matter not our opinion.  If they are biting on a bare rap don't tip...............if they are biting on a tipped rap you better tip.
