Anyone been on Elmore?

I went to my parents on Christmas day, and there was a shanty out behind the store.  The next day, it was further out, and they had tip ups out there.  Was it anyone from here?  Just wondering how thick the ice was.  I never can understand why people fish so close to the dam early season there, I guess I just assume the ice would be thinner in that area...
