Lake Memphremagog
« on: Jan 01, 2010, 10:46 PM »
Guys,

Any info on the fishing here?  Looking to fish new areas of northern Vermont mainly for pike and have always seen this place on the map but never heard anything about it.

Thanks for the info!

Magog is a huge body of water,  Less than 3 miles in the US but extends northward into Canada for another 30 almost.  In recent years the northern population has exploded in South Bay.  The "big lake" holds everything from trout, pan fish, salmon, bass, smelt ..... Many fisherman including myself are happy to see pike taken out of South Bay.  Not hard to get to from Mass.  Take 93 all the way to St. J and Magog is another 30 north on 91.  Weather is key.  I would plan your trip around the forecast and avoid the high winds.

Thanks Leaf!!  I have fished Champlain for the past 20 years so the wind doesn't bother me too much.  I've always seen this place on maps but never heard from anyone who's actually fished there.  I agree, the trip up there for me would be an easy one and a tad bit shorter than going to Champlain.

Are there any motels/hotels in the area?  Also, bait shops?

Thanks again!!

G

A great place to stay if the Newport City Motel.  We stay there every year for an annual trip.  Rooms are OK but the pool and hot tub are better than average.  Bait and gear at Warner's just up the road and a great place to eat is the East Side.  Accesses are pretty easy to find both in South Bay and ether side of the main lake (Strawberry acres and Eagle Point)  Average perch is better than Champlain.  Have fun!

Is Eagle Point on the northern end of the lake? I found the one at Strawberry Acres and the one on South Bay but didn't find Eagle Point.  Also, where is Warner's?

What's the latest ice thickness info?  Made a scouting trip up there on Saturday and saw some people out on South Bay but didn't get on to ask anyone.

Thanks!

Tight lines!

I stopped in at Wrights. I didn't know about Warner's.   Where is Warner's?  I tried looking it up online but it doesn't come up in the search findings.

Report from today
Friday 1/15

Access from Eagle Point is drivable and there are about 30 shanty's around The Twins.  Solid 9-10"

We set up a few tip-up and jigged for smelt and perch.  Perch were spotty and pretty good size.  Smelt were non-stop and typical for Magog.  Guys getting ready for trout tomorrow.  Some snow and slush on the ice and misting rain all day will add to it.  Left the ice with 30 or so perch and gave most of the smelt away as bait for tomorrow.

How big are the smelt on magog?  I used to fish champlain for smelt but since the alewives took over we can't seem to hammer them like we used to.

smelt run smaller on magog maybe average in the 6/7" range.  Pretty aggressive though.

Thats good eating size!  What is and good day of smelting on magog?  Do they bite at night with lights like they used to on champlain?  Do you guys fish for lakers with the smelt dead on the bottom?

As far as smelt on Magog- There is always a Shanty Town just off off of the Twins targeting Smelt and some setting up Tip-ups for Trt/Salmon.  Magog has Lakers, Salmon, Bows, and Browns.  Smelt is good bait for all of them.  Some of the better days for the bigger fish are when the smelt aren't so dense.  I'm sure we could have caught hundreds of them if we were trying.  We have even caught some monster perch in the past using smelt as bait on bottom.  Yea, dead smelt w/little weight is good for Lakers.

Anyone know where I might be able to get a depth map for Memphremagog?  I've been looking everywhere and can't find one.

12 inches of black ice trucks are driving on. Access had 4 inches of water on and
then all black ice..It was a neat day with the front rolling into the area.
