How deep?
« on: Jan 05, 2014, 09:10 PM »
How deep and what is the deepest you would fish for crappies?

I fish a lake that has a weed edge at 8 fow and a drop off starting at about 14 fow going to about 40 fow.  It flattens out around the 30 fow and then gradually gets to the deepest part of the lake.

So far I have found them in about 22 fow.....do you think it is worth going deeper?

Thanks

As usual, each lake tends to be fairly unique. Boils down to food, what it is, where it's at, when it's there among others. Luckily don't have to go deeper than 12' in 25' of water and usually much less and fish shallower(6' in 9' usually). Have taken them at 35' in 60' consistently (daylight), just the way that lake was. Never know until you look and try

Thank you.  I just wanted to confirm that I wouldn't be crazy for going what would be super deep in 40 feet of water.

You're never wrong investigating a different approach. Just because the majority fish a certain way in a certain area and do OK doesn't mean there isn't a forgotten untapped bonanza that nobody has cared to check out in awhile

I caught a mess of crappie in 9fow but they were suspended at about 3-4 ft.

Have you ever caught them in 30+ FOW?

They will suspend in deep water 30 plus feet when the temps really start to drop.  The deepest water in the lake is always a degree or two warmer than the shallower water.  Crappies will school in the deep basins for that little extra warmth.  They will be on the move so you will need to drill a lot of holes to keep on them.

Check this video for tips.

I have been catching them suspended a good 10' from bottom in 60+fow in one of my favorite lakes. Never hurts to check deeper.

And not just for Crappies. The better 'gills will start going deep once the shallow areas O2 levels start dropping. Luckily midday can get hot mid winter
