1 dead afterfalling into Lake Winnebago
« on: Feb 19, 2011, 03:23 PM »
LAKE WINNEBAGO - Several vehicles have fallen through the ice of Lake Winnebago Saturday morning, killing one man.

In Calumet County, the sheriff's department says around 7:30, three vehicles were traveling on plowed roads on the lake off Fire Lane 8 in Town of Harrison and fell through the ice. Officials say of the three people riding in one vehicle, two escaped on their own, but the third fell into the water and was pulled out by a dive team. The 59-year-old Appleton area man was taken to Theda Clark Medical Center in Neenah, where he was pronounced dead. The man's name has not been released, pending notification of family. His vehicle was submerged in about 16 feet of water.

The other two vehicles each only had one person inside. Both of those people escaped on their own.

Sheriff's crews also responded to a report of a fourth vehicle through the ice not far from the location of the first three incidents. No further information was available on that incident.

Meanwhile, the Fond du Lac County Sheriff’s Office confirms two vehicles went through the ice south of Pipe this morning. No one was seriously hurt in those incidents.

A FOX 11 viewer sent in a photo from Fond du Lac County, possibly of one of the incidents there. FOX 11 incorrectly identified that photo as coming from Calumet County Saturday morning.

Sheriff's officials are recommending extreme caution for anyone traveling on the ice because recent warm weather has caused conditions to deteriorate.

FOX 11 and fox11online.com will have more information as it becomes available.

I heard about this while I was out on the lake waiting for a sturgeon to swim by. (which didn't happen)  Made me nervous driving back in.  Sorry to hear about this. :'(

The ice on Winnebago is very iffy in some spots right now, especially where there was heavy travel this last week.  A lot of the old plowed roads are the worst spots to be now.  Also most of the hole markers for old spearing holes have fallen down.

Saw the road blocked off on the north side of the lake that morning. Very sad.

Late ice you are better off staying off the traveled paths, they melt faster, just the opposite in early ice they freeze faster, but not the case on late ice the snow goes away on the paths and lets the sun work on the ice. Off the beat down path the ice stays good longer.
