pleuger trion clicker is silent
« on: Jan 25, 2022, 06:50 AM »
my reels are starting to lose the click sound when a fish rips drag, the spring and clicker seems intact. Is there something I can do to fix this without replacing? Some reels have a screw on the spring that you can tighten. Mine does not. Any ideas? I don't want to replace spring / clicker just yet especially during the season.. Is this a DIY job?

I rip all the clickers out of my salt water spinning reels.. it's nobody business when I have a fish on...
that should be an easy  fix if you get the parts

One benefit of the inlines... nobody can here the drag coming from in your shack.

thanks pool guy, I saw that video, my reel doesn't have that screw to adjust the tension. I wish it were that simple. I like to hear the drag but its not critical

Some you can bend back in place if there's no screw.  Kinda hard to get it just right b/c you can't see what you're doing + can't line it up properly until you put it back together.  Another possibility is that it's hitting too high or too low, so both horizontal + vertical alignment have to be right.

Another common problem is that the clicker can freeze in very cold temps...then work fine at home...could be the wrong grease...

I've had albies turn a drag clicker completely facing outwards...just needed to reset then it was fine again.

Good luck!

🤣😊😋😁
I like the silent approach,  only my "loaner ",reels have drag wizzers, and that's so people people dont turn my lines into a slinky.

Oh boy don’t I know that type. But they “know what they’re doing” when you ask em not to reel against the drag

I think I figured out what's going on the cold weather is affecting the clicker as someone mentioned above I don't really think there's anything I can do I brought the real in the house and let it warm up and now it sounds perfectly fine.
I know temperature affects metal expansion and contraction I'm try to conceptualize what's going on with the spring tension will the spring tension become greater or weaker when it's cold?
Either way it seems to be a cold issue.
I'm thinking the spring would be tighter when it's cold causing it to contract more and then it pulls it out of contact with the gear to make it click?

No grease is needed on that, itll never see enough use( high speed screamers) to justify it..
And no bending, it will only bend again, you bend it back and forth several times and it WILL  be broken.. permenantly.

If you want to grease it because you cant help yourself,  the shell Gaddus I recommended in the stealth bomber thread is the perfect low temp. ( I think its 220 vs  my memory sucks these days)Grease,  it stays viscous at 14 below zero. .
It's what is in my, and every jack trap trigger tubes.

1st recommendation is to listen to Roccus - he's right about alot of stuff!   ;D

You could try it "dry" first, try to clean up whatever grease is on there that might be freezing up.  IF it still sticks, then you need some low temp grease.

IF that doesn't work, I've used HT Blue lube before that works pretty well.  Not sure if it's still made...there are some newer icefishing greases that you could try...Frabill Subzero + Beaver Dam No freeze...those are for tip-ups...but same idea...you want some ultra low temp grease...and just a tiny amount of it, too.

Good luck!
