Fish Fry Saturday Night
« on: Feb 14, 2018, 01:28 PM »
Got the call from Buddy Ron that the perch were biting and I know enough to heed Ron's call.  It was perhaps my lifetime most epic perch bite.  Drop and drag keeper after keeper.  We weighed several fish over a pound and walked away with the fish still biting.  We are going to have a fish fry with the family's Saturday night!  All fish caught on a  spike tipped Halli in ~7" of water.  We had 17 inches of ice where we were fishing.

We stopped to take this picture less than half way through! (a couple of dinks were kept for bait)

electric fillet knife

100%

The bag weighed 25lbs.  That's a lot of skinning.

Nice catches, I put a hurt on bluegills today, caught 25 of the buggers. I let them all go... Almost annoying to catch so many fish jigging LOL, when you kinda like to catch a mixed bag of pan fish, trout and bass.

Nice catch
We kept some perch and blue gills from Shaw pond last week and when I cleaned them I found some had yellow spots in the meat they looked like seasame seeds. I cut them out but am curious what they are and if the fish is ok to eat.
Thanks

Grubs.  Ok to eat if fully cooked.  Im not surprised to hear you found some grubs.  Smaller places like Shaw you'll find them more frequently.

Hahaha! caught a cod that had more worms than my local park after a rain filled 60 degree day!
Just add water.

even the store bought cod have worms. the orange rock cod have a TON of worms. A lot more than the deep water variety.

People always say that but I never have.  Not sure why but it just never appealed to me.

We dinned like kings last night.  Fried fish, french fries and coleslaw!  With five of us, we were only able to eat our way through half the bowl and had to freeze up the rest.  Awesome solid white fillets and we inspected real close and detected no grubs at all in these guys.  If any one is ever looking for an awesome fish dry coating I highly recommend Drakes Crispy Fry mix.  I like Panko also but the Drakes is the bomb if you can find it.

Yellow perch sell for big bucks per pound commercial caught out of Lake Erie.  Our local Giant eagle grocery store sell a 12oz bag for 14.99 lol  They are very good eating. Andy's Cajun or in 4 C's Italian bread crumbs..

Here's one crunchy recipe that goes very fast at my house.   Dust with lemon pepper or season salt, flour, egg and hand crushed tostitos corn chips. Chase that down with a beer and repeat.

Try the eggs next time. Great in an omelet. If their really big I cut them in half. Never battered them just pan fried in butter. I’m sure batter would be good but deep frying might get messy, not sure.

I like to put some frosted flakes in the blender, grind to a fine powder, touch of garlic powder, touch of cayenne pepper, touch of onion powder and salt. Dip skinned fillets in egg, shake in the bag of seasonings and fry in coconut oil. Yum! Getting ready to clean up some from my weekend. Eggs? Seriously you guys eat the eggs? How is the flavor? Is it fishy or flavor neutral? Never tried those myself....that would be a bunch of extra eats I always discard. How large are these worms you see? I haven't seen worms in the perch where I fish. I have caught trout with external worms (copepods) and perch with black spots on the meat.

we should have a thread on the front page to share fish recipes. that would be a nice addition.
