I find them this time of year shallow. 6-8 FOW in a lafe that the max depth is 18FOW  in the same places you would find them late summer to early fall...

ok. There is a weed flat that usually holds some fish, but its in Wisconsin and the ice is already a good 6" thick so idk if there would still be there

Depends on the body of water.   If there is green submerged weeds, then start your search there, anywhere from 3' to the weedline, paying particular attention to bare spots inside the weeds and any points or indentions on the weed edge itself.    If there isn't much vegeation or the vegetation is brown, I would check any drop-offs near the largest expanses of shallow water on the body of water you are fishing.  Especially good are isolated deep spots in shallow bays.

Plan on drilling lots of holes and covering water.   When you get into them good, you will be marking three or more at a time on the flasher.

Cameras always helpful when shallow. Can see if they're in or outside the weed bed, sometimes seeing the bed and drilling either closer or further away can change a so-so bite into a hot one, often it's only moving a foot or two

Start the search on the weedline, and ya shouldn't have to adjust too far from there.

All these are helpful, drilling first inside the weedline, dropping the cam down, drilling outside the weeds and seeing were the weedline is I have found to be a good technique. Also what kind of jigging is best for gills, especially since i don't no how deep they are?
