Fished off  the north end straight out tonight. There was about five inches of ice and we picked up 7 keeper crappie. We went out from 6pm till around 9. Didn't mark a whole lot while trying to locate them.

Went up this am for a few hours. Fishing was ok. Crappie n bluegill. Shut off around 1 so we packed up and headed back home. Fished off north end on 5 inches of ice. Some crazy *****s had ATVs and a side by side out. Not sure how thick the ice was where they were but seems a lil early for them... Especially only a hundred or so yards off the ramp.

I think the majority of people have been on the North end.  I fished yesterday afternoon north of the fishing pier, was 7-8".  Didn't catch a lot or even mark much but was great to get out for the 1st time this year.  I didn't move around so can't report any other ice thickness.

just got off brushy, marked lots of fish but nothing was biting, a guy came up to and talked for a bit, turned out he was driving around seeing if anybody was having any luck, he'd talked to two guys who were using a camera, they told him they could see fish but couldn't get a thing to bite, I guess they'd even bopped a walleye on the nose with a minnow but it wouldn't bat an eye at it
Title: Re: Brushy Creek

Super slow for us today, and if we didnt have two cameras between us both, we wouldn't have caught the ones we did. Moved out to the channel in 42 fow, since other guys were, but couldn't mark a fish out there. We should have just stayed in the 27', where we were at least seeing and catching a few. Cold front prob has them shut down.

Some people pry woulda kept them but I don't keep anything small. Was a great day, just gotta find the size now.

Finally made it down to brushy fished over by south east boat ramp by the jetty marked a few but no takers got there very late 4pm should have stayed home next time will be there early in the morning and fish it hard I don't like driving that far and getting skunked.
As I have never fished brushy before just wondering what a few good lures are for this lake or is it a bait lake? I don't want to know top secret lures just some that are productive so I know what they prefer

Any new reports on how the fishing has been? Going to make the annual trip on Sunday and looking to see if they are hungry. We will be going  out from the north ramp.

Any help is appreciated. Anybody use the Dingledrop jig out there yet and have any luck with it. The guide up here on a Clear lake uses it and loves it for the yellow bass, bluegills, and crappies.

Can't stress enough to find unfished water... From 24-30 foot deep. Go a little further south than the majority, I found numbers of perch doing that the other day. Good luck.

That whole lake is pretty well unfished this year in comparison to the last 2 years. 35fow has been A pretty good number lately cant say the fishing been real fantastic maybe adequate but you can still find A limit with some work.

There have been alot of perch this year only probably is 1 in every so many will b almost a keeper but otherwise they are dinks. Gotta keep them to since they come out of deep water they dont handle it very well at all.

Sorry for the late update on how we did. We started out west of the north ramp in our usual location amd didn't even get a bite. When I put the camera down I found out why. A musky was lurking on our area. We did also see a northern and a perch. W moved around noon to a location over the creek channel an immediately seen fish on the camera, crappies and gills. We did get 4 crappies and 3 gills but that was all that we got whe we left around 4. It was beautiful out there as it was 54 degrees according to the truck. There was a lot of water on he thrice go go into the hole which clouded the water up quickly so don't know if that had something to do with the bite being slow. We also did see another musky in this location as well so he probably scared off a bunch of the fish. Most of these fish were in 24 feet of water and about 1 foot off the bottom.

Wish they would have bit better with it being as nice of a day as it was.

Post by: toofuss on Jan 29, 2014, 09:44 AM
Well, we fished from 5-1:30 yesterday and only had a total of 3 fish come topside. One was an about 13 inch perch but that was the only thing keeper sized. Probably drilled 200-250 holes all up and down the east side of the lake and could not buy a bite. Will say this though, the ice is plenty thick lol. Anywho, slow fishing is an understatement.

It was a tough bite for me Saturday.  Drilled probably 35-40 holes and all I was able to pull up was a 13" crappie.  I could find fish here and there, but they weren't hungry for what I had.

I was there on Sunday from 6am to noon and caught a ton of 8" gills and kept 5- 9" gills and 2-12" crappies and a perch. Between my brother and I, we could have kept both our limits of gills but I'm pretty picky about what I keep. Woulda stayed later but I had my little girl at home I wanted to spend time with in the afternoon.

Is everyone still up north or have they moved down to the south end? I was up 3 weeks ago and caught a  few nice crappie and a 14" walleye. Its been slowin down every time I go. Wife n I caught at least 40 crappie on Xmas day with only a few small ones and maybe 4 gills, all out of the first 2 holes I drilled. Would love to have another day like that up there. It was a blast

Few people at the very north end but most are mid lake and farther south. I've had luck in the south end, just not the size of fish I'd like. But as they say, just cuz I ain't catching em doesn't mean others aren't! I caught a 16" walleye a few weeks ago and it came between 1-2pm in the afternoon. So bite varies.

Lots of nice walleyes on camera today...they cruise and completely ignore my presentations. Huge musky too. No crappies seen. Can't see your jig over 18" from hole at 23 ft on a sunny day today. By 4:30 I needed my lights on to see the jig. Caught 6 nice gils and a 12" perch. Fished from 1:15 to 5:30. Never moved. Caught a cigar eye too. I was the only one on the entire lake when I drove on. At 4:30 two trucks drove out to the channel. Leaving, one more truck was by north ramp.

On the lakes in south central Iowa where I  go the crappies have been scattered out until dark and then they really turn on and school up its really crazy I only managed to catch 13 decent keepers today until it was dark and then I caught 9 more in 30 mins or less and also hooked a big cat that I lost because of a bad hook set then I caught a 2.5l lb cat right before I packed up probably only caught 75 fish today but only had 43 total keepers that I just got done cleaning .  So I'm loading up for another day tomorrow

I would suggest four wheel drive only because of the many drifts.  Lots of bare ice and lots of areas with little snow but also many drifts.  sometimes it is hard to judge the snow depth and you end up driving thru a drift that it deeper than you thought.

I had the entire lake to myself Friday, until 3 when two trucks came out. I caught 20 crappies, and went thru 3/4 tank of gas, drilling and fishing. Fished outdoors on my knees. Caught them in 23-41 ft. Sat on my butt in my shelter on Saturday, relaxed using my camera, and caught two nice perch, one nice lm bass that hooked itself deep, one keeper Gil, and 7-8 dink gils. Ice was 20-23" and 3"-2' drifts, depending on where I went. I took four wheeler, and kept my truck out of stuck issues. There was lots of slushy wet snow. Been bitterly cold up there, so that should be history.

I did great last saturday but not so hot on sunday. Crappie gills and a nice fat perch. Hooked into something big for 5 minutes or so. Was fishing with the bro in law, very inexperienced, line wrapped and he thought he had something so he was pulling. Got him to put it down and then his pole moved a minute or so longer. Needless to say, he ripped up on his pole again and I could feel it and then my pole went straight. Want to talk about wanting to strangle someone and throw em down a hole... anyways I'll be back for more this weekend. Hopefully its like last Saturday again only with the wife or normal fishing buddy.

I experienced a good night bite last night. Really got wet from dusk till I got off. I'm done driving trucks on it. I used atv yesterday, and my travel cover had 4" of slush on it, and 4" of water in the tub, just driving off of the lake. Had no water in tub, till I drove off, and I was from one end to the next yesterday before I setup for my night fishing.

Ive seen pic two hrs ago from a friend, of what looked like some open water around some trees on north end. He said it was mainly water on top of ice.  West ramp as of an hr ago was still fine, he said. No one but an atv was out as far as motorized traffic. He was on foot. Said ice was 17-23" where he was. Wind blew only 8 mph today up there, so at least the wind isnt a factor. Be safe and good luck guys

20-23" everywhere I was on it yesterday. Rode my atv from west ramp, all the way to north ramp...and fished all over in between. Westramp had about a ft of open when I drove off at 9 last night, front tires had to drop off in about 8-10" of water. Ice was in good shape imo and the guys I was with. Use your own discretion.

Front Wheels dropped  in about a foot from shore or so, water was less then a foot deep. Front wheels were on solid ground before rear wheels dropped...no biggie. Prob heading up soon, and going to bring some 2x6's to ramp my atv on. Lots of false reports of huge open areas around trees up there the last two days...its water on ice around the trees...I didnt see any open water, and those areas are few and far between. I fished right against trees yesterday on dry ice....use your own discretion people!!!!

3:45 pm today. Water looked too deep for this guy to venture out. This is South Ramp, it was the last to go from reports, so I didnt bother driving to any other ramp.. I could see tire tracks under the water, so it's water on ice. Wind blew 20 mph plus up there today. There was a SUV parked at the ramp, and they were in for a wet walk to get back on land.

We were able to access Brushy yesterday from the west boat ramp.  However, after a 10 hour day of fishing the shoreline had deteriorated further making it a knee high wet return off the ice.   Most of the areas that we fished on the west end held 18-28+ inches.  However with the recent warm temps the ice integrity is much softer then we've seen all season.  Some anglers were also getting on from the east ramp and the west jetti.  Shorelines possess skim ice around the entire lake, so use extreme caution if you do decide to access.  Also be cautious around large tree lines.   There is open water in these areas as the ice has deteriorated greatly.   However, many of the smaller sections of trees are still fishable.  Remember to use good judgment and to bring your safety equipment with you if you do decide to venture out.

Between 3 anglers we covered quite a bit of area yielding a fair amount of pearch, crappie, bluegills and walleye.   Maki plastics as well as a combination of smaller jigs tipped with wax worms produced.   As the warmer temps continue to approach, Brushy will soon be finished for this season.   Be safe on late ice.

I have some buddies there tonight and they said it is still there. I thought permies had to be off by a certain date. I'm not sure they will be getting it off, as it was setting in the water that is on top of the ice. By the way, a buddy and I got two limits of crappies on Friday night from 7:30 until midnight. It was a blast fishing under the full moon and listening to the coyotes howl!

I went out Saturday with two friends from Waterloo and the lake wasn't nearly as bad as people made it out to seem, more than likely for safety reasons which is fine with me.

We went out friday from west boat ramp and it was only pulled back from shore three feet and easily accessible with a plank or rubber boots.  All the ice was very thick and the only bad spots were around large trees.  Small trees were fine to walk around.  Obviously caution needs to be considered because you can't just walk wherever but I never once felt like I was in danger.

Fished all day bite was good until weather shifted and it shut the bite off pretty much the rest of the day until near dark and then the bite took off again.

I did manage a 25 inch walleye in the middle of the day which is my personal best under the ice.  I saw something red on my flasher when I was fishing 35 ft and it was only 10 foot below the hole so figured i didn't have anything to lose even though i though it might be intereference or something.  Well ended up being a big eye!

Getting off the ice that night we broke the edge a good 2 foot more so was a little toughter to get off.  I would say that my last go at fishing in Iowa this year and since my wife is expecting in two weeks I think I should probably not travel to far from home  :P

It was a good long season so I'm not complaining.

I thought permies had to be off by a certain date.

Feb 20th was the last date ANY shelter could be on the ice unoccupied.  As long as the shelter is occupied, it can be there.  I highly doubt that is the case but if there is somebody in it all the time it is still legal to be out there.  As far as the law is concerned there is no difference between portable and permanent.  The difference is occupied or unoccupied.
