Well the darndest thing happened the other day. First, a muskrat made his appearance in the shanty. He popped up through my hole and I d**ned near kicked the oxygen habit! :%$#!: After he scrambled for the water and I scrambled for the ice scoop, there remained little sign of him...... UNTIL TODAY!
Seems that he liked the shanty enough to make it his feeding station in all three holes. The picture attached is the mess he made on the ice under my access hatches. He (or she????) crawled out of the hole and utilized the area below my shack as his or her personal feed bed, (or push-up for you trappers.) Wouldn't mind his or it's random appearances, but his or them, and they're mess has to go! SO WHAT WOULD YOU DO? -Barleydog

-
One word. conibear. that'll fix his, her's, it's, 'em.
-
Jim....funny you would post something identical that happened to me a number of years back......I know exactly what you are talking about....they sure wake you up in a hurry dont they.....same mess.....there's only one good thing I can say about the situation.......THEY WONT BE MOVING.......so you better......looks like you are fishing pretty shallow...lots to eat.....and nice holes to slide back under after getting some rare fresh air....the only bonus????...you wont have to open any holes if you stick around the same spot.....Grump
-
Looks a little smokey in there...sure you weren't seeing things? ;)
My suggestion would be to tie a camera around their neck, and train them to find fish for you ;D
Really though, I would trap the 'rats out.
-
I'll tell you what, you supply the wood and I will bring my own bait and sit in there all night and wait for them to come back ;D. This happened to the Alarm shop guy last year, it came right up the hole while he was sitting in the shanty . He said it scared the pudding out of him, I really think it was cheese curds and not pudding. :o
What about making sort of a man hole cover with 3 inch legs for your hole?
-
Grump is absolutely right. They have set you up as a feeding and air station and will continue to come back all season or until the food source near your shanty runs out. The best alternative is just to move.
-
If you cover the hole as close as you can when you're not there so he can't get in he'll stop coming. We had one about 7-8 years ago that would come in and he stopped. When he'd come around he'd circle so the baitfish were darting in all directions and we could tell it was the muskrat coming. If we forgot to plug the hole there'd be all manner of vegetation laying around. I was always scared of catching him with my hook.
-
A frind of mine had that happen a few years ago, he had a mexican guy from work with him it was his first time icefishing. He set the world record for exiting an ice shanty! LOL
-
It's pretty disconcerting when they come out of the hole and you're sitting right there! Not something you expect to see. :D
-
why dont you just trap them? set a trap and check it each day. Traps are pretty cheap and you can rid them of your fishing hole.
-
When he comes up just splash in the hole with your boot and he'll get the idea.
-
leave a mean old house cat in there..... for real, I trap a lot of rats in the spring and they establish feed piles (or pushups as mentioned) and will continue to use them. a 220 conibear trap will cover the hole great and take care of em quick....
-
LOL, that's funny but not funny. ;D I have never heard of that but I can see it happening if muskrats are in your lake and you are near the bullrushes or there houses. I would first try as the others suggested, block him/her/them from entering. Just have to be sure your blocker don't freeze in. My second option would be to trap it using a coniebear. Good luck with the rat attack. ;)
On a side note I saw one time in an outdoor magazine, a photo of a guy who caught a pike in his coniebear trap. He had it set in the rat runs but the old pike must also have know where to eat rats or trap minnows, and the pike got it.I never saw that before eather but interesting none the less.

Pellet gun?????
Mac
.44 mag lol, i would be fun to shoot it with a pellet gun, ice fishing and hunting all in one what more could you ask for
-
Hey guys,
Last year I was fishing a little pond in Winneconne, It was just cold as you know what. So there I was sitting in my scout, jigging for bluegill, watching my flasher, when up through my hole comes a large brown creature. I kicked it back down the hole while screaming like a little girl. The guys I was with thought I had caught my shanty on fire. Looking back on it, it was pretty funny, but at the time, it sure made the old heart beat.
-
One word. conibear. that'll fix his, her's, it's, 'em.
here here, i have to agree a 110 conibear will change the attitude of a muskrat real quick
-
I can only imagine that if this were to happen to me, I would literally FREAK OUT!!! Seeing one in the openwater or whatever is one thing..... but flying outta your hole in a cooped up shanty is another! I'd freak out, then freak some more, after I was done freaking out a third time, I'd likely freak out a fourth or fifth time before passing out or slugging down a relaxing and refreshing beer!!!

Shoot it. 8)

.44 mag lol, i would be fun to shoot it with a pellet gun, ice fishing and hunting all in one what more could you ask for

put him on a hook and use him for pike bait :roflmao: :roflmao:

EAT MORE MUSKRAT!!!!!
-
i had the same thing 2 years ago and my niece was fishing in my shack when the darn thing came up the hole scared the sh!t out of her. I was fishing in about 5' of water I tried rake out most of the weeds under my shack with a pole with a small rake end on it but it didnt help i eventually moved. Another guy in the same area had it begin to happen to him also the rat would trip his tipups by coming up those holes to get a breath of air. He said he had a cpl cases of beer one night and waited for the critter sure enough the muskrat poked hi head into the shck and cracked with a piece of firewood. The muskrat didnt die and the guy ended up moving also. I havent been in that area for the past 2 yrs and havent had a problem but i know that the muskrat moved two shacks out of his area.
-
Some pretty funny stories!! Dynomite, 44 mags, etc... It's good to see the majority call for the rat's head. :roflmao: I'm setting some traps this week, and "hopefully" by the weekend, the rat or rats will cease to use my shack as a feeding post. Couple o' 110 conibears ought to do it eh? Good first trapping lesson for the kids. I'll save you the meat Icedawg! :P
-
my uncle wacked a otter with a .410 when he kept getting in his shack and eating his bait. made one hell of a mess though! lol!
-
Well the deed is done! Decided to fish after work and lay out a couple traps in the shack. Opened the shanty door, and lifted the hole boards to find a fat little muskrat staring up at me. He bolted for a hole he kept open, so I decided to fish a couple hours..... The hours passed and the rat didn't come back. I set the traps and readied them in the hole, when UP COMES A RAT RIGHT IN THE HOLE I'M SETTING THE TRAP IN! Hey, it was my lucky day. I dispatched him with the ice spud, and prepared the traps again... Well DEJA VU! ANOTHER RAT! This time he's to quick for me and bolts back into the depths. So I wait a minute, feeling like one of those PBS polar bears on a seal hole. He makes the wrong move and comes up again. Like his compadra, he, (or she) is dispatched humanly with a blow from the spud. Muskrats - 0 Fat guy - 2 Didn't think I'd get them this way, but what the heck! I still layed 3 sets in the holes.... Probably a nest of them under my shack. A regular muskrat commune eh? ;)

-
Looks like they will make a nice pair of mittens!
-
great job skin em out and hang em in the shack so other rats will know their fate
-
Hey Barleydog I hope you haven't broken any laws dispatching those critters. Not that I wouldn't do the same thing but unless I was sure it was legal to do I wouldn't go postin if you know what I mean.
-
Great thread! LMAO
You should hang that pic in the shanty to show all your buddies that stop by.
-
That is awesome BD! Funny coincidences and great way to put 'em down!!! LOL ;D ;D ;D I couldn't quit chuckling after I read your post

Wonder if those will be in the tourney this year? Mods? Adding another species this year?
-
Wonder if those will be in the tourney this year? Mods? Adding another species this year?
....lets see if LoneWolf picks up this post....what do you think Doug??....obviously illegally caught without rod?? (flexible that is)...nightlight hunting would probably be a new category!!!...no tape measure.....no tourney card.....you can't see all of the tail....and what's this guy doing up in the middle of the night?...I think this is a cover for some sort of subversive activity.....I say lets send him to India to practise up and become a full-fledged pro at whacking Rats....so my vote would be NO....Grump ;D
-
well i think the no rod thing can be waived since a spud was used it is technically icefishing equipment. as far as no tape measure goes if no other RAT entries are submitted they would be the winners. however the absence of a tourney card means instant disqualification. sorry BD ... :-\
-
well that makes it official.....screwdriv ah brother backs my opinion....don't have to wait for LoneWolf......if BD decides to appeal our decision, then I guess Doug will have to hear this in Supreme IceShanty Court of Appeals....which would likely delay the announcement of this years 2006 online tournament.....hope it doesnt get pushed to the legal limit.....Grump >:(
-
Interesting way to get them Barleydog. No need for traps eh? ;)
Man they were a good size too. I use to trap them a few years ago, you could get money if you sold them to a trapper to skin.
I think you may have made a new category in this years tournament. So far you have it in the bag.
More may return though. ;D

why dont you make friends with it. If you can tame it, maybe it will keep your hands warm.
-
Glad you got rid of them. They look like they are good sized, ive never seen any up close but they look pretty cool.
-
I suppose my 3 1/2 inch magnum woulda scared the fish eh?
-
HAHAHAHA! :D :D Wack a mole! :D Thanks Billditrite! Good on you for trying to create a muskrat category, spuds are fishing equipment I agree. Come on Grump! Who needs a card? Ya had to put a halt to it eh! I was out past my bedtime fishing for trout with a crappie light, no beer, and the reverend from church, Honestly!
I did skin em' out, and they're drying nicely on the stretchers. I have some Krowtan, and a couple of beavers that need tanning, so they'll end up in the tanning solution together. I like the idea of hanging them up in the shanty! HAHAHA! Scare away the rest of those vermin great idea.. Although the mitten idea did sound good Fishdaddy, especially in 30-.
Cstolp, I have a trapping lic. so all is well. I just circumvented the trap and dispatched them instead.
-
Old Trappers never die....they just get new whackers :D
-
Dead-ender on the tourney.... ;D ;D was actually suprised to learn that the muskrat trapping season runs from May!!! :o :o....the fur on those MOLES ;D ;D...should be just about prime.....make sure you post a pic of the finished hides Jim.....(you ole whacker you)....Grump :roflmao: :roflmao:
-
Way to go now ya need to find a flyfisherman that needs some rat and swap um up for some iceflies
;)
-
I think it's sad and mourn their passing. I used to trap and shoot them but not for the last 25 or so years. I've only ever seen one rabid one (he was on the ice, btw). Normally the muskrat is a clean little fella and never bothers anyone. RIP Bob and Larissa.

RIP Bob and Larissa :'( ;D I think I can hear that old song playing softly in the background....What's it called?...Oh yea, "Muskrat Love" ;D ;D
-
Buzzbomb that's just toooo funny! :D :D Hookset, Ol' Bob's in my right hand alright. He was quite hung for an ol' swamp gopher. ;D :D In the "prime" of his life. Sick to think Bob and Larrisa were using my shack as a Motel 6!
Well after the "Wack a mole er' rat" incident, the ice was thick and no signs of additional rats... as of yet.

Do we have any songsters amongst us? Mabey we could come up with a muskrat original and get it onto the next American Idol. Mabey something along the lines of "Musksplat Shanty" :woot:
-
Hilarious man.

love the honorable mention their, nice touch lonewolf :)
-
HAHAHA! Grump you..... ! The comical works of Lonewolf himself!!! A fine job, and the certificate looks great. Now Alaska's "one up" on the tourney! Come on you guys from BC and Manitoba!!!!! Top that one! :D :D :D

I have a 76 Lb black lab that hates muskrats after a fight she had with one. One was nesting in the seats of a row boat that I overturned to use for some duck hunting. Then the Dog vs rat smackdown started. That rat would not leave the boat. You would be suprised how much damage those little buggers can do to a dog. But the dog was toying with it, so if she just would have crunched it she wouldn't have gotten 2 holes in her leg and a one inch hole through her cheek, NOW THATS A PAIRCED CHEEK. Now she hates muskrat. If she gets a wiff of them out duck hunting she is hard to get her back on to hunting ducks.
-
Ya, i had one pop up the hole on me the first time out this year. wasn't expecting it, scared the S#!* out of me! He was just sitting in the hole looking at me for about 10 seconds. I had the ice scoop in my hand, didnt know weather to club him on not,(not a lot of swinging room in the portable) I thought it might just P!$$ him off if i didnt get him hard enough to take em out!

I believe I remember reading about a fisherman spearing thru the ice with his black lab in the shanty when a big northern swam by the dog went thru the hole after it and got trapped under the ice. Swimming around he found another fishermans hole. When he came up thru that hole the guy didnt try the door- he exited thru the side of the shanty

Well, you all know I was against killing them and it still bothers me. Sometimes I go visit them where they slumber and wonder about how things might have been.

Avalanche,
That did happen up in Minnesota. I've got a book around somewhere that has funny and weird documented things that have happened to fisherman. The other guy's iceshanty was really close to where the lab dived in. I seem to recall the lab was polite and shook himself once he popped out of the hole.
One of my favorite ones is where two friends stopped fishing together because everything they got together on the ice it rained. One day they decided to meet and there was no way it was going to rain as it was below zero. When the friend showed up -- you guessed it -- a warmfront came through and it rained.
BTW I have had a muskrat come up in my hole to several years ago on the Barbee Lake Chain in a channel.
-
LMAO ;D ;D ;D
How did I miss this thread????? TOOOO funny.
Belated congrats BD.
-
I had one come up one of the holes in my shanty years ago. He just sat n the corner chewing on a cattail or reed or something and after a few minutes he went back down and never came back. It was fun to watch.
-
how funny, would have been a great fight on the jig line!!! Wonder what kind of bait to use for them.
-
No doubt now you'll have to take up trapping......LOL :)
-
OMG!!! I think i just blew a gasket from laughing so hard!!
-
Depends on the trapping season but if you have more than one hole put a conibear over one and then a foot hold right by the feed bunk or put it under the feed bunk. It always works well for me while trapping.
-
No fun Crappie98! I trap, but it's just not the same! Ya feel like a polar bear sitting atop of a seal air hole... You wait......and wait..... then WHAM! your prey comes through the hole. Gets the adrenaline going. ;D
