weather change
« on: Oct 18, 2022, 09:43 AM »
Looks like next week the weather is changing and more ice making weather is on its was, still some highs in the daylight hours but getting colder at night, might be a year I get out around thanksgiving again if it does not warm up again in November like last year.  Anyone else looking at their gear and getting ready, just need to get the minnows on order and get the tanks ready again for another year since trapping has been bad again this year and all the canals got hit hard.

Single digits Friday and Saturday mornings, after 3 weeks of T-shirt conditions—weather whiplash🤣.

I killed my elk when it was perfect open water fishing weather, now it’s elk hunting weather oh well.  Let’s hope for a colder December this year, last year sucked!!!  Starting to switch over the gear, not putting the boat away just yet…

Thanks Trent! It's cool to have a webcam show first ice. Unfortunately 3 hours later it was almost 100% ice free. Wasn't even that windy today. I think it'll lock again tonight and stick. Wish all lakes had webcams, cool to see it in real time

Hard to concentrate on ice fishing when I am still catching fish like this in open water! Landed a 15 inch crappie last week, my biggest one ever. Didn't weigh it but probably over two pounds.

Ice fishing, though, has been on my mind recently as I went over a friend's house a couple of weeks ago and we built another smitty sled. This past spring, I bought a pair of wide powder skis for $20 and they are basically new. My old smitty sled has skis that are not nearly as wide. I'm hoping that my sled will pull even easier as I still walk everywhere I go on the ice. Now if I could only cut down on the amount a stuff I haul with me! I purchased a new 8 inch Jiffy Torch auger for my drill this fall. Blades are supposed to hold up better in ice that is laced with dirt. Tired of my lazer or flat blades dulling immediately when they unknowingly drill through ice with dirt mixed in. I'll use my Strikemaster a lot but when I am at Buffalo Bill or Lower Sunshine, I'll use the Torch.

Great crappie Glen!!! I was itching to get the boat out a few times during that gorgeous fall weather but now I’m not so sure! Would rather it get cold!

I would like to build a smitty as well! Need to get on the ball!

That is a big crappie for sure. Looks like Bighorn Res? I had my 4 yoa grandson out last week for his first boat fishing trip ( He lives in TN) we kept 62 crappies in 3 hours in one basic area using Panoptics. Picture on "Myfishfinder" WY page.

Looking forward to coming to Keyhole again this winter for a trip or two. Big Horn does not have the numbers like Keyhole, but there are some real big ones in there.

And the weather Rollercoaster continues, had snow on the ground and cooler weather looking good for cooling off the water temp and then the wind came in Saturday and melted everything. But looking good later in the week of highs below freezing, drained the oil in the boat motors this weekend and need to cut up elk and then grab the gear and start getting it all checked out and ready.

Maybe because of early ice fishing? Minus 11 this morning.

Assisted with another elk harvest with a 15 year old last night and had to go recover this morning. All the small pounds are iced over and I walked on em. I’m 260lbs. One is a stocked lake. Could fish in the NE corner on small water. Still elk to harvest so not this week for me!
