Smelt on Magog search
« on: Jan 14, 2017, 11:48 AM »
I may take all of the kids from Barre to Magog tomorrow. Before kids, I always drove out to the Twin Islands, for perch and smelt.  Now, I won't drive out since kids.  I want them to get into the perch, but also want them to experience smelt, if we can get into them.  Other than the Islands, I have never caught them.  Where else can we go on there, without driving out or taking a 30 minute walk, for both species?
Silly rookies, traps are for animals!!  Tilts are for kids!!  Fishermen use tip ups!

never fished for smelt in magog, but if you want perch and smelt within in walking distance for the kids you could hit Joes pond, would be a shorter drive for you too.

Right off the boat launch out 100 yds by the shanties. But it has been slow this year, I just left there and caught 20 in 4 hours, almost all of them from 4:15-4:45. Bite is a dusk bite, without a underwater light it only lasts 45 mins and then shuts off completely.

Magog is the only place I have ever fished for them myself. Never had too much luck catching much of anything on Joe's though..

Wlloughby is my favorite smelting grounds but thats not an option right now. i have had luck on Joes before. I havnt been this year but most times i move around the deep basin till i find them with a flasher, and they are ususaly deep but within a short walk of the launch, and as far as finding perch dinks can be found any where near shore, and bigger ones can usualy be found on the deeper flats over by the island. Like i said before ive never fished magog for smelt but if your looking for a short walk i have heard of guys catching them on south bay, cant tell you where maby some one that has fished them there will chime in, and of course perch would be a given in south bay.
