Title: Yes or no question...
Post by: Iceassin on Feb 25, 2018, 07:16 AM
...is a cordless drill with 480 in/lb of torque enough to turn a 6" lazer auger ?

I would think so but I wouldn't go drilling a lot of holes in a row.

Not sure if this helps, but I have a 8” Nils, and a regular 18v or 20v would not turn it. A hammer drill does.

I think it has a lot to do with the blade sharpening angle on the Nils, though. The Lazer should work better.

if it has 4 amp battery it will be. i used and still can use my 500 inch pound ridgid drill that is the brushed motor design on my 6 inch lazer just fine.

wet ice/snow might bog it down some, just clear out the hole more if it happens by lifting it up and allowing the shaving to leave the hole and lift some what on the auger so it take less ice per revolution. most of the time you didn't have to do any of this other than lifting some just before breaking thru the ice. lazers like to jam some what at that point.

i use kovac icemaster auger adapter to keep from loosing the auger down the hole.

Brushless 750 in/lbs of torque and 4 plus ah batteries ....other combinations may work...but you may be disappointed in the results and not living up to the full potential of a drill/auger combo.

No. I tried a Bostitch 450lb brushed drill with 1.5ah batts turning a new 6in Fin Bore. It would turn it a couple three times and cut out.

Thanks for all the responses. I'm looking at going with the Bosch with 600 in lbs with 4.0 batteries. Should be plenty of gusto. Love the lightweight of this unit as well ( 2.5# w/o battery).

Drill came in the mail the other day and I am already impressed. Now just to see if it will punch some holes...next year. Best deal I found was Home Depot website. $224 w/tax and free shipping. Included 2@ 4.0 aH batteries, charger and carring bag.. Every where else I looked was in the $300 range. If interested, model # is HDS181A-01

Depends on the ice depth. My 340 in-lb Craftsman turned a 7" Mora. It would have been fine through 10" but we have 30" this year. It would barely do one hole and even then it would bind and then need a charge.
