Livingston county, lake chemung
« on: Dec 30, 2017, 09:04 PM »
Hit lake chemung, in Howell.  Action was gills and crappie. Crappie bite was on fire! Fished in around 25 fow about 18" off the bottom.  Fire tiger was the order of the day. Fish didn't seem to care about bait. Minnows and waxxies both produced. No pics, sorry, kids kept me busy. Slush ice was miserable,  but solid 6 inches under the slush. Good luck, tight lines!

Is the whole lake frozen now? A few days ago it was only the east half

Whole lake is locked up, however I would give the west end more time to build ice, before taking a chance.

No, I don't live on it but I have been fishing it for the last 20 years or so.

In the summer, I have never gotten one through the ice. They are there, however not in great numbers. If I want to target them, Whitmore or Woodland would be a better bet. (In this area) Chemung, for me at least, is a crappie lake

I was out there Jan 1st and had 6-8 inches of ice all slush on top is solid now. Caught bluegils crappie  and one small perch. Bite was very slow on the east end

Gills, crappie and pike are really what to expect on chemung. I'm glad to hear the slush froze over. That made for some miserable fishing.  I'm going to try and get out this coming weekend. Not sure where yet. I really want to get some perch on the ice.

I'm coming to stay on the lake this upcoming weekend.  Can I have an update on ice conditions.  Any help would be great.

plenty ice, plenty snow and some slush beneath.
I like to sit around on the ice doing nothing because my wife won't let me do it at home.

How thick is the ice on the lake currently? Is there a bait shop near Howell? Again I'm coming in from NY with no knowledge of the area.
Thanks,
Randy

you can get bait at ricks in whitmore lake. or wards hardware in hamburg. I'm from the area but I don't ever fish in Howell so not sure if there is any bait shop closer. but those 2 I mentioned are 15-20 minutes away
