since first ice for most of us is either here or right around the corner, i was just wondering where is a good place to target perch as the first lakes for me to freeze are good perch and panfish lakes. deep? shallow? weeds?
-
Arch, it really depends on the lake, but most places you are going to want to start in the deepest standing green weeds, and work deeper from there. If the weeds happen to have rocks nearby, that makes them 10x more attractive to perch.
-
I like to start on shallower flats in the 10 - 15 foot depth range. The best ares are flats that have some gravel or rock that concentrates forage for perch. Transition areas from hard to soft bottom on flats also are really good. Perch also seem to like pure muck bottoms too.

Any suggestion on what colors jigs work best for you ??
I am going to try to jig more this year and appreciate any information.

perch colored hali spoons, gold/green prism swedish pimples, green and orange marmooskas, perch colored jigging raps (smallest size)

Bigredonice,
To be honest I just bought a few swedish pimples from Cabelas this afternoon.
I went with 1/3oz size Is that too big or too small

Thats a bit on the big side. I like quite small spoons and jigs for perch. The best spoon size is 1/16th ounce, or 1/8 ounce in deep water.

It is a bit big for perch, but if you put a dropper on there, it should work...heck, guys up on lake champlain north of me use 1oz flashers w/ droppers for those perch.
-
i use any color small ice jig that glows on a dropshot rig loaded up with maggots or an eye or minnow head in 25-35 fow. even a plain small gold hook with your choice of bait on a dropshot rig will get perch.
-
it don't know the weight but i usually use a #2 pimple for perch

fishing on thurs 12/1, i watched an older guy nailing perch on a lure he called the doctor? it looked like a miller or sutton spoon but it was concaved and thin like a needlefish spoon. he said they are getting harder to find now but man do they catch fish either jigging or casting out and dragging it. he was tipping it with a perch eye and/or orange perch belly?
