i have one. takes a while to dial it in. if you are in weeds they will show up. be sure not to use it without water or drop the ducer, not good for it.

I have the same model. I would use it on graph mode. It really isnt made the same way flashers are, and seeing the history on the graph you can make out what is fish in a lot of clutter. Also try switching between the frequencies. Weedy areas show up junky but chirp mode seems to work better. How deep are you fishing?

i agree.

X 2 . I never learned to use a flasher . In graph mode you can see your lure/bait and fish checking it out . I use dual frequency so I don't miss anything .

I also have the Garmin Striker 4. I always use it on traditional mode. Seems to be the most of effective for me. Adjusting the settings can work well for a certain set of conditions be not work well for another. So expirimenting is best.

Yes I'm always on dual frequency too. Most of the time I watch 77hz but sometimes when it gets a little screwy 220 hz can show me a little better what is what.

You can also go to settings and click remove surface noise.

Thanks Doppler , I'll have to try that next time out . With so many guys using the Striker 4 , we should keep this thread going just to help each other out with settings since the manual isn't much help . Of course along with YouTube .

I'll start . For those of you that bought the $99 - $110.00 plain unit for a boat and wish to make it portable , I built my carrier out of a $10.00 cooler from Wally world . I mounted the transducer to a piece of thin PVC , ran the cord up through it and slipped a piece of Pool Noodle over the PVC so it floats in the hole . The cooler holds a 7 amp hour battery , transducer set up and the Striker 4 unit very nicely . As a bonus to using a cooler , if it's really cold out , you can place a chemical hand warmer in beside the battery to make it last longer on the ice .

That's why i got mine too. I wanted something i could use on the ice as well as adapt for use with my canoe. Worked out really well in both aspects, especially for the price.

I bought a Striker 5 with the portable kit, I've only used it while in my boat. In the warm weather, I get at least 15 hours on 1 charge.
I'm tempted to try it out on the ice. Can you just put the transducer in the hole or do you need to adapt it like 4X4 Dad did?

I have had the striker 4 ice bundle for 3 seasons now. This year I got the ice transducer for it. I absolutely love this unit. The graph mode works great and pair that with the underwater camera and it is even better. The only downfall that I have found with this unit is not being able to view or load the lake contours on it. I will be buying contour maps for my handheld garmin astro 320 to fix that issue. I would highly recommend this unit for someone that doesn't want to pay an arm and a leg.

I have the striker 4 ice bundle and the ice transducer. I have used it 2 years now. I really like the fact that I can widen or narrow the cone angle on the transducer. Depending on the depth of the water, wider for shallow water and narrower for deeper.

I use mine in the 200hz mode with the flasher in twenty feet of water +/-. I just got to the point where I can catch the fish using the flasher. see the fish rise up , stay with it till the colors intermingle and boom.... you got em. Dont know about the scrolling screen yet. Overall im liking it a bunch for the price.

i bought the portable kit. the battery lasts several outings before i charge it even in very cold. I have not had it die while out yet. i always bring it in at night. i have mine set with A-scope on and auto zoom. i dont like to mess with the setting much fraid i will not get it back the way i like. took a while to get to dialed in.

I get how some guys like to tinker but all the mods, and changing cones, and power levels? Dual frequency gives both cone angles, and regular graph mode is better than a flasher all day because it leaves the history on the screen for you to see rather than memorize what the fish did.  The sticks to hold the sonar are a pain to transport.  Just stick the transducer down the hole and fish.  I can see the mini barrel swivel, and minnow head separation on a jigging rap treble in 20 ft with my zoom set to the bottom 5 ft.  Keep it simple.  The machine pretty much works out of the box.  Oh and smashes a flasher because of the history thing and ability to use in summer on my boat or kayak.

The only downside I've heard of to just placing the transducer and bare cord in the hole is , you take the chance of damaging the cord either by sharp edge of the ice or putting a hook or gaff point into the cord . Not only will you need a new transducer , but you could possibly damage the unit . At the very least wrap the cord with some type of protection from damage . Rubber hose maybe ?

thats a good tip thanks. i was a little concerned when having to pull it out of ice when it freezes to to the side of the hole.

Thanks for the advice, I'll drill a separate hole for the transducer and use a hole cover to prevent freezing.

If you decide to buy the ice transducer, it has a better way of locking the cord inside of the float and the cord does not come in contact with the ice, works great.

Has anyone tried the chirp ice transducer the gh10 that comes with the panoptix ice bundle I tried it once but never turned it on again. Im thinking about putting it on the striker4 so my friends that don't have electronics can use it when they come with me. Before I got the panoptix the striker4 worked great for 2 years while i cut my teeth on the lakers I would always use the chrip200hz with split screen zoom if in water over 40ft

Garmin GT8HW-IF Ice Fishing, CHIRP Transducer is the upgrade needed for the ability to widen cone angles. When set up in the settings of your striker 4, you will be able to see your small jig bouncing on the display, as well as any fish. I do like the float system on this ducer much better.

I've used all types of electronic depth reading devices, but I never did for ice fishing until last year. The main reasons I went with the striker 4 are:
1 - ease of use, I really find the user interface quite user-friendly.
2 - versatility, flasher, graph, my favorite ..... graph with A-Scope combo, and waypoints.
3 - it works very well
4 - price you get a lot for what you pay

Don't over think it, settings should stay pretty stable, once you have it the way you want it. Note that you are always going to adjust it a little bit. Play with it, familiarize yourself with it, know what it's capable of, and not. This will give you more confidence. Settings become second nature. Bottom line is to catch fish and have fun. ;D

I've been using a Garmin Striker 4 for 2 seasons now.  Lots of help from guys on Ice Shanty - Thank You all!!!   I use the graph and the traditional mode alternately.  Just depends on my mood.  The traditional mode and A scope arr really handy.   I typically switch to 200 kHz when I am over 15 - 20 ft deep.   Weedy bottoms are difficult.  I also use it on my fishing boat in the summer.  So for $125 it is pretty awesome!  I definity catch more fish with it. There is a tip on Ice Shanty to use the suction cup mount to get the transducer to hang level.  I made my own version because I had the time and supplies.  The box I made was all scrap 1x4 in my garage.  It is hinged for battery access.  Also hard to see in the pics but I have a web strap handle that is attached on each end.

If you are running the ducer that came with it, I would run the cable plug side first through the float that came with the kit then just fabricate a stopper so you can set the depth, this will prevent the cable from freezing and or rubbing on the edge of your hole.

Used my striker 4 for 2 seasons now and love it.   Features and versitility are awesome. Like having the flasher if needed but don't use it.  I use traditional graph with the A-scope.  Love this feature.  For me, can't speak for everybody but  A-scope =fish. Once you get comfortable and use the unit,  don't think there is a better deal out there.

I also picked up a Garmin Striker 4 and added the ice ducer.  I used it tonight for the first time and it's impressive; now my son can use my showdown and we won't be fighting over sonar.   The settings were easy to dial in and if anybody is having problems with the ice ducer setup I can share how I ran it.  It worked great on both flasher mode and traditional with A-scope.  I was worried the screen was going to be too small but it was easy to see.  This should work well in my kayak too.

X 2 . I never learned to use a flasher . In graph mode you can see your lure/bait and fish checking it out . I use dual frequency so I don't miss anything .

Second this. I run the 200 to see best where my jig is and 77 to locate the fish. Definitely turn the cartoon fish off, especially when there are two or more lines in, to reduce clutter. We run three holes with the transducer in one, jigging the others and can pick up all that we need to see.

Hi Guy's, new guy here.  I just ordered a striker 4 +cv, had some cabela's cards and points to use.  I realize the season is almost over here in MA but still wanted to get to play with it.  I haven't ordered the ice kit yet, so i will need a battery.  Can I use one of my M18 battery's to power this?, and if so is there any thing special i should know?

Thanks
Steve

I assume the M18 is your drill battery ? If you can hook it up properly , I can't see why it wouldn't work . But if it's more than 12 volts , I'd be cautious . A small 12 volt rechargable is only $20-30 , and they last 12-16 hours . I used a small Coleman cooler $10.00 to mount my Garmin and the whole setup fits in the cooler when transporting . If it's really cold , I place a chemical hand warmer over the battery to make it last longer . Works very well . Good luck and tight lines to you .
