warm boots
« on: Jan 09, 2012, 01:31 PM »
Looking to pick up a pair of ice fishing boots. Right now I just use hiking boots or work boots but on the cold days I find myself wishing for something warmer. What would you guys suggest? Thanks.

I would suggest field and stream swamp tracker 400's or 1000's. Have had the 400's for 2 years now and have never had my feet cold while hunting, ice fishing or snowmobiling. If you're going to use them for ice fishing only the 1000's may be the way to go because they are more insulated even though they are a bit heavy imo. They have them at dicks sporting goods for $90-100.

just picked up a pair of the new "arctic pro" mucks. Haven't had a chance to try them out yet though. My woody max mucks would keep my warm on the nice days but when it's really cold I would have to put toe warmers in to take the chill off.

I swear by my Ranger Glacier Bay boots:

17” Forest Green double insulated pac
- All-rubber, 100% waterproof, ozone-resistant, hand-made upper
- Trac Tread™ outsole
- Built-in 3/8” polymeric foam insulation in foot and ankle
- Removable liner of polymeric foam wrap (total foam thickness ¾”)
- Built-in 9mm felt midsole for additional warmth underfoot
- Drawcord closure, woven nylon top cuff
- Heel kick-off
- Steel shank
- Comfort Zone to -80˚ F

Reny's carries them, or New England Marine.

My feet have NEVER been wet or cold.

(do a search on IS about them)

Sorel Ice Kings, they are a rubber bottom pack boot. They are a touch on the heavy side but my feet never get cold in them, no matter what the temp drops too.

Cheap skate? Want to "save like a mainah". I've owned various types and all work reasonably well INCLUDING this idea as being the cheapest ever and equal to any name brand I ever used. Just buy a regual old pair of rubber slip on boots like you would use in the spring ($10-12 bucks). Get them about two sizes larger than your normal size. Buy a good pair of felt liners ,like in snowmobile boots ( about $8-$10). When used in conjunction with a good pair of wool socks your feet will be as warm as your buddy's the difference being he paid $100 -$150 for his and you have $20-$25 tied up in yours.

You're right about the boots being warm but that price is crazy.

I have a pair of Irish Setters (don't recall the model), that are relatively light for long walks, but have 2000 grams of Thinsulate Ultra and keep my feet warm and dry!  Good boots make all of the difference while on the ice.

Ok... I dont get it. Why wouldnt you buy a pair of boots from Beans? Life time warrantie...

I have Beans pack boot. Big and gaumy and heavy- by far the best boot out there. Buy a pair of ice fishing boots. Dont buy boots that you can wear ice fishing. I only wear my pack boots when ice fishing. Last winter I fished Moosehead with out a shack or any shelter at -14 degrees F. with a steady 30mph wind and higher gusts. Cold feet?? NOPE! Buy them. Then when they get worn out, take em back!

Arctic sport muck boots price is right and they are the lightest weight boot I've ever seen and there rated for 40 below all you will need is one good pair of wool socks.

I have problems with Muck boots as my feet sweat alot.  They're warm to start but halfway through the day my feet start to get cold.  I love my snowmobile boots that halve a removable wool liner.  My feet are toasty all day and they dry quickly overnight when you remove the liner!

I believe its down to mickey mouse boots, arctic muck and LL Bean. I kind of like the idea of a lifetime warranty but I have heard good things of the other two on here and on the ice. My bank account seems to favor the mickey mouse.  ???

I'm certain all the boots mentioned are adequate for ice fishing Maine. If I was rolling in the coin I'ld probably purchase a pair of each just to find the most comfortable and warmest boot. I have Sorels and the Bata (mickey mouse) boots. Lately I find myself using the Mickeys cause my feet sweat a lot in the Sorels and then take forever to dry. I've never heard of anyone being cold in the mickeys. You might want to check on the lifetime warranty of bean boots... I just had a pair of them fixed at beans and it cost $40. They were 4 years old and they did a good job with the repair but 20 years ago it was free.

With the Mickeys there are imitations, if you can get the BATA brand. Those are the ones that were made for the military and I'm not sure how the others are but I would think they'll be better than hiking boots.
