Seeking guidance on new fish finder battery
« on: Dec 25, 2022, 07:04 PM »
Hi all, looking for some guidance regarding my new fish finder.

I just got the Lowrance Hook 2 4 in. as a gift.

I'm having a hell of a time finding what exactly I need for getting it hooked up to a battery. The battery pack suggested for it is the Lowrance Universal Portable Pack for 5" and Under, but I cannot find it in stock anywhere.

Anyone have a suggestion, or some tips about what I should do?

Any help is very much appreciated.

You can run it off any 12v battery, the old way would be an SLA the new fangled thing is LiFePo4.  For a unit that size you don't need anything real large, something in the 6Ah ballpark should do you just fine.
I'm a man, but I can change, If I have to, I guess.

15ah amped battery. Don’t bother with lead.

Cool, appreciate the advice.

This may be a dumb question but I'm having a hard time conceiving of how I actually wire this into the battery. Do I need something like the terminal pigtail?

Sounds like you have an open water unit ..you may want to consider an ice pack/kit . Do you have a picture of your unit and its components ?

I think you're right. It looked like with that pack it could be made into an ice unit, but admittedly I don't know anything about these electronics.

Here's what I have: https://www.lowrance.com/lowrance/type/fishfinders-chartplotters/hook2-4x-bullet-skimmer/

15ah amped battery. Don’t bother with lead.

For a 4" lowrance? Thatd run for a week without recharging. 5 or 6ah (not volt) lithium would be plenty. It draws about 4w, so just under 0.3A at 13.5v.

15ah would last 50 hours
7ah would last 23 hours
6ah would last 20 hours

Sounds like the OP needs a full ice kit, those are extremely hard to find this time of year. Im not sure where to check for one, but it may be easier to buy the ice transducer, a battery, and make your own transportation base.

I have the 15ah Amped for my Helix 7 and can tell you it is a top-notch battery.  But for a Hook, I’d save the dough and get a regular Cabelas sla for $20.

I put the 12 volt Dakota Lithium 10Ah in my ice 45 . Half the weigh & Last for days ! Make sure you buy the Dakota charger or you can damage the battery & it wont charge correctly. Its worth the money. I bought mine thru Reeds. This time of year you should be able to get a good deal. Good luck Walt.

Yeah you are at the cross roads ..it may be cost prohibitive to assemble all the the right parts piece meal ...is the gift returnable? ...it may be a lot easier and many many better options for ice fishing sonars/flashers..

If I were to assemble a unit I would go this route

You will need to level the transducer..this post/thread should help

If you're gonna use this for ice fishing, add spade attachments to the power line, so that you can clip them onto a battery. Buy some zip ties and loop one through the skimmer transducer hole, and leave plenty of slack. Next, zip tie that first tie tightly to the main cord, and adjust it so the transducer sits flat when you hold the cable a couple feet up.

Attach the unit to a piece of 3/4 plywood, and carry it in an insulated soft cooler that you can unzip and see the screen.

I just saved you $200

The batteries have spade terminals.  All you need is two female spade plugs.
