Heavy Snow + Ice Formation?
« on: Dec 01, 2006, 05:50 PM »
How will this heavy snow effect ice formation this week(DEC. 2nd...)? The strong winds should slow it down, correct?

The high winds will be more detrimental to the formation of the ice than the snow itself.
We're looking at some lower temps finally. Let's just hope the wind dies down for a few days.

WORK is that annoying time between FISHING TRIPS

If ice hasn't formed on your lakes yet it should actually help keep the air colder, especially at night.  The wind will be the culprit.
Bring on the ice!!!!!!!  <br />

Wind is bad but once she caps, then let,er blow! Seems like I,ve always heard ice being made on windy days more than calm ones, if it stays COLD! Water on ice & wind is a deadly combo fer sure. Just hope this aint a repeat of last yr., got on the ice 7-8 times in Dec. & then came New yrs. eve, 70 degrees & a t-storm, end of season in mid-IL. Went north a few times but $100 a day in gas tapped me out pretty qwik! The weather is here, lets hope it holds!      GOOD FISHIN!

Iceturd,
Laughed my butt off at your "moniker" (display name). If you don't mind me asking, where are you located in central (mid) Illinois? Perhaps we could hook up and fish some time. Come on HARDWATER! You email me or send me a private message, if you don't want it displayed here.

Iceman I don't know what you got for snow but I got about 18" and I saw some ice on the hennipen canal today. Coming back from boys b-ball game tonight the temp. reading in my van said it was 7 degrees and this was at 9 p.m.  Hope that will help me to get to the ice a little quicker and more often than last year.  Yea I made one trip up to Mille Lacs after we lost our good Ice and they were complaining because they only had 2' of ice.  So all we can do is pray for the cold to hold.

If you have snow on skim ice it'll insulate it not letting more form as fast as no snow the good thing about snow is the snow pack helps keep the temps down more making and less melting thats exactly what we need It looks like the week of Xmas we are going to have a few days of -5 to 0 as a high so that'll make some good ice

In Illinois ice season lasts about 3 seconds, and then you are wet to the knees.
