Question?

Does the ice fishing White fish is closed or open on Champlain ?
I don't see in Vermont regulation.

Thanks

I am not certain but don't believe there is a closed season on Champlain for Lake Whitefish. I have fished Champlain for quite some time and have caught a few but they were always unintended catch while bottom fishing for something else. I don't know anyone who fishes for them specifically. I know they target them in the Great Lakes and parts of Maine. Certainly great table fare and the state says the population is healthy on Champlain. Probably could develop into a good fishery if people figured out how to catch them. The last one I got was last spring open water while fishing spawning perch off the south west tip of ILM. I let it go but estimate it was close to 5 pounds.

Like fishy1 said, there is no closed season on whitefish. There is also no limit on them, as far as size OR number. The only thing keeping them from being popular as a game fish is that they are typically hard to catch. UVM has characterized the population in Champ as "unexploited". They are the best tasting fish in the state if you ask me; even better than walleye!

Thirty plus years ago I went to a commercial netting operation across border the in Missisquoi Bay. I got lost in the fog while duck hunting, and ended up somewhere near Venise Bay.
You could buy them on the shore; but most were sold in Montreal. I doubt if it's still legal any more, even in Canada.
