I'm just curious as to what people are spooling their reels with when targeting northerns.  I'm not looking to get into a wire vs. fluorocarbon leader debate or to steal anyones lure presentations.  Simply... What # test and material mainline on what type of reel?  Thanks in advance.

I run 30# Tuf-Line Duracast braid on my rods. Leaders are home made coated black wire for pike and flouro for lakers. ;)2

Never tried it , but from what I'm reading about it on-line it sounds great,  I like that it's a braid that doesn't absorb any moisture and the abrasion test results against it's competitors are impressive, thanks for the response.

30# suffix 832 ice braid to 20# berkley 100% flouro joined by a back to back uni knot finished off with a 60# duo lock snap.

30# braid is a great choice. If you were thinking mono, I would step down to around 14 pound. That tuf-line is some great stuff, as is power pro and suffix.

10lb suffix elite barrel swivel 2ft peice of 10lb fluoro.. All on an ugly stick combo..  Im lucky if i jig up a half dozen pike a season.. I spend more time jigging crappies and perch when im pike fishing

my tip up reels are spun with 50lb mason line, barrel swivel, to 3-6ft peice of whatever fluro or mono i feel like using that day

I use bait casters, and I use 40lb Power Pro red, which is 10lb diameter. I also back the spool with 10 lb mono.  Then when PP starts to wear, I strip it off and flip it around.

  I'm a traditionalist. For pike 30lb. Dacron, for Walleye's and panfish 20lb.

When i have around 10# - 20# on my rod. They run hard and the line is really rubbing on the bottom of the hole. Whats the best line to run in cse of the bottom of the ice cutting you off??

Use an ice braid. It's abrasion resistant and super slick.
