I'm fishing rainbows thru the ice for first time this winter -- do you care to share your choice of lures/colors/live baits?
Thnx!

Eye winder, where are you going to be fishing up in the sheridan area, I moved from there and fished up there quite a bit last year. But the lakes around the buffalo area we would jig a swetish pimple tipped with a worm and the trout would hit them. Usually fishing10-20 feet below the ice.

any small jig will do the trick. I like rat finky's tipped with a meal worm pinched in half.
white or chartruse are my go to colors.

Wyoming Ice,
No it is not Healy. But I do fly fish it every once in awhile and it does have some nice bows. I would like to Perch fish it this winter sometime. We are lucky we do have good ice here so far.
eyewinder, Here is a pic. of some of the jigs I use to trout fish. I also use them on all panfish to get them down faster I will tie on a larger flash lure and below it about 4" to 6" mono tie on one of the small jigs. something else I do to it I will tie on rubber legs to the small jigs.

Wow, great photo -- looks like it came right out of
In-Fisherman's Ice Guide
-- thank you very much!
Do you usually tip them with bait, or fish them
au naturel
(sic)?

eyewinder,
I always tip them with some wax worms, mealworms, salmon eggs. I know some fisherman will take the eggs out of the fish wrap them in cheese cloth and the can work extremely well.

Thanks again for your help -- now I've gotta go find some fish and conduct field research (nasty work, but somebody's got to do it).
I, too, believe that CPR (catch-photo-release) is the way to go with the big girls. I'd hate to guess how many are lying in the bottom of freezers where there's absolutely no chance that any of us will ever catch them again.
