Finally Broke the Sylvan Lake Slump!
« on: Jan 08, 2012, 05:10 PM »
Went back to my usual spot on Sylvan today with TravIce after an almost 2-year boycott, and we actually caught fish! Ice was anywhere from 10" to 15", full of air bubbles, white all the way through and just plain ugly. When you drilled through it, it was just turning into mush instead of making nice big chips.

We were set-up just after first light, and before I even got a line in the water, I noticed something hanging around down there on my flasher. Turns out it was a nice healthy walleye that weighed just under 4lb.

Within an hour i'd seen 4 different species taking swipes at my wire worm. A decent little perch I had on for a bit, a super chunky 6-8lb pike that kept coming back throughout the day, and a tiny little whitefish.

Then I caught one of these:

Travis caught a few that size throughout the day, and missed a few fiesty whitefish that were hitting lures way to big for their mouths. I landed my first whitefish from that lake in over 2 years:

By early afternoon, it had died right down, Travis caught another small walleye before we packed up and called it a day. Not the best day out, but after the severe spanking we got the last few times out, it was nice to catch some fish out there again.
A bad day of fishing beats anything else I'd be doing today.....

Not a new auger, it's one of the last years of the "old" style 10" Jiffy STX's, before they went to the all plastic units. This is my third season with it.

Catching me smiling in a pic is like getting caught blinking, they both happen pretty fast  :P

Well done, sounds like a great day, I went to gull, the gents I was with caught a few whites, never really been my thing and my dismal showing confirmed that for me, I did however catch some rays, beautiful day.

Happy Jigging !

I'm headed to sylvan on Sat. Colder weather is on the way too from what I seen. Can't wait to see that ice get better so I can park my newly built trailer/shanty on it. What side of the lake did you guys drill into. I'm guessing Jarvis bay if not then maybe sunbreaker cove. I still got bucket of dew worms from My day at Birch lake. Do the whites like those too besides wire worms? I'll give it try I guess and report back on Sunday.

If you go just past Sunbreaker Cove there is another road heading south to Lake (name escapes me).  We usually access there.  Good flats and nice fast drop off straight south.  Pretty much the north west corner of the lake.  Good spot for Pike and Whitefish.  We have had a few good days on 'eyes there as well (C&R of course).

I can't say I've ever tried using real worms for whitefish, it might work. I just tip my wire worms with a few maggots and jig like crazy. I got some action on green and red ones throughout the day.

I did not break the Sylvan Lake slump this weekend....One walleye caught, was trying for whites and just didn't have the right spot or technique or something.....

Tons of shacks on the ice though and thick ice at the RR23 launch.

There was one about 10" took a swipe at my wire worm, I don't normally target them though.
