Cheap Reels
« on: Jan 10, 2011, 12:32 PM »
Bought some cheap Berkley ice combos at bass pro. pretty happy cause they only cost me like 20 bucks a piece but the one from last year the drag is gone on it. Looking for a good cheap reel. I hear the open water reels are the way to go. plus it doubles for ultra light fishing in the summer. Anyone use crappie reels on ice fishing poles?? any help would be appreciated! thanks in advance

When I first started ice fishing, I took my open water reels and converted them onto ice fishing poles.  I just used my regular open water fishing lines as well.  Found out how unruly those lines were in the cold.  Then converted to some ice lines (Trilene Microice) and got much better results.  Those reels back then were some cheap Shakespeare reels 30 size.  Then along the way I got some Shimano Sahara 750 reels and it was like day and night difference in performance.

frabill bro series reels are nice i haave two of them i dont know if you would consider them cheap at 30 bucks a pop but they come with an additional spool. great reels though have the super handy push button folding reel handle as well as smooth drag and metal spools. deafinatly not a cheaply made reel check em out ya never no spend a little more and might last more than one season.
