split shot on bottom of my line, then depending on where perch are in water column that day anywhere from 8"-24" above I run a jig with a minnow

Is this essentially a drop shot setup? i always wanted to try that on the ice but have never gotten around to it.

Use a quick release drop shot , then you can adjust the height of  your baits
I jig , on a rare occasion a dead stick if running 2 rods

Basically yes. Always had good luck with it, usually set it up on a dead stick rod in the corner of my shanty and jig while I wait for them to hit it

Depends if they are really aggressive I"ll go with a hali with a couple of jigs or flies above. If the bite is light I will go with small tungsten jigs.

Same as grandpa.  One time I thought I had a whale only to bring up a huge gill on one of those flies and a jumbo perch on the hali below.

Big fan of forage minnows. Tipped with minnow head or spikes depending on what they want

Start with your favorite jig on the bottom with a perch eye, and then finesse / finesse jigging.  Perch in the lake I fish are finicky and lightly suck it in, a lot of times you don't even know they hit.  I love the spring bobber for light hitting perch.

It depends on their mood, I had times when jigging with tip downs out that the bigger fish hit light on tip downs you barely knew the were on and other times the opposite was the case.

Exactly. I use a perch eye and also jig with plastics. I like to try to match the hatch with plastics. Love that single "thump" which is often a jumbo.
Winners don't know they're in a race.

They just like to run.
