Chains a must I use rear chains and had fronts studded. Total control I do have a winch and never thought of putting a pipe or block of wood to help get unstuck great idea. I've always studded my sleds so try to use them when I can.

I run chains front and rear.  I have a winch.  I also use these things called ice angels that go in a drilled hole in the ice. You drop them in the hole attach your winch cable. These work awesome with the winch and pull you right out.

It helps to have a lift and you should deflate the tires to get the chains attached. After getting them on the tires and adjusted to look somewhat even around the wheel, re inflate tires and tie any loose ends down with cable ties. Get a set of the “bungee hooks” or chain tighteners and finish the job. Now do the other wheel! Chains are a big pain in the a$$ to put on but they work.

the snows not to bad it's the slushy mess that's under the snow sometimes that definitely will get you stuck

X2. I've plowed right through  light snow no problem..... But Slush underneath can get you stucker than stuck! The chains will dig down to solid ice and pull you right through

this!..slush is thy enemy..it's miserable and makes for a long day..chains and a shovel are your only hope under these conditions.

I've got a set for my truck Denny, they tend to ride a little smoother and bunch up a little less,at least in my experience.

put some ice studds on the fronts as well as the chains on the rears
I'll second that. If you have high traction in the rear and nothing up front, you will find it impossible to steer on slick ice.
Atv solid "locked" rear axle will push you straight.
