Zipper replacement on ice shack
« on: Sep 24, 2018, 11:26 AM »
Anyone in the Bangor area had to replace a zipper on thier shack? Was just given a shack that needs the zipper fixed! At worse I got a free sled out of it  ;D

Took mine to one of those canvas repair outfits that deal with boat covers, etc. Did a nice job. Even repaired a hole I'd burned in it via my heater. I would think there would be some place like that in Bangor. If not, some place nearer the coast?

What's wrong with the zipper? You can often fix zippers with a little work.

I have contacted a canvas place, $10 a foot to replace, however they said most the time the slide can be the issue. Looking into that on my own.

Not being an expert by any means, $10 a foot seems a little high. Does the entire zipper need replacing or just sewed back on? Have you checked one of those alteration places? Bet they could at least put a new slide in if that's the case.  Just tossing some ideas out there for you. ;)

I think just the slide is bad. When you run the zipper it stays open behind it. What i've done for research says bad slides. Hopefully that's it.

Plus, shack was free, if I need to dump 70-80 into it I'm ok with that.

Try adjusting the slide yourself first. Get a pair of vise grips and adjust them so that they're just touching the slide on the top and bottom when they're closed. Take them off the slide and adjust them closed about ⅛-¼ of a turn more. Put them on one side of the slide and close them. Repeat on the other side. If it doesn't fix it, try slightly tighter on both sides.  I've used this trick to fix backpacks that have had the same issue that you're describing.

I had done some research about that and this morn in my tried it and it worked! So I'm still free so far on this shack. No seat in it however. Will look into either making a bench, just using a couple 5 gal pails, or who knows?

awesome! good to know about zipper slides expanding like that. probably frozen zippers didn't help it any.

I'm stocked. Trying to find a cover now. May just get a rugged storage box to use for gear and as a seat!
