Perch Roe
« on: Mar 30, 2018, 07:06 PM »
Right off the bat, the biggest breeders go back into the pond.

I'm sure we've all had those days where the bite is totally on fire and all of the fish get tossed into the bucket. It's not until we get home and start cleaning that all of a sudden there is decent amount of roe available.

I've cooked it up a few different ways from butter, salt & pepper to making fish roe cakes that get fried up and dipped in a custom sauce. I've seen a some recipes out there but nothing that really got me really fired up.

Does anyone cook it up or just chummit? ;)

Don't puncture the sack when cleaning! Dip in egg, then flour, then egg again and then roll in crunched up corn flakes . Deep fry ! Tasty!

I like to butterfly it out and fry it with the rest of the fish.  Delicious!

Freshwater caviar.  A little soy or Frank's is always a nice touch.  I grew up throwing nothing away so I learned to love it.

I remembered reading the write up from last year and laughing hysterically thank you for bringing up this topic. And no I haven't ever tried perch roe just for sake of continuing the discussion. Not sure I would make it for the dog either my dog is a bit of a licker and his breath is kicking already I don't think I need to help it along any more than I have already

I remember that post from a few years ago.  Hilarious!!  I tried it a long time ago ... and would have pretty much described it like that attached post!  Have never even considered trying it again.

Thanks so much for the great feedback all. Sounds like it's a hung jury 50/50.  :) It's nice to see how we all approach this topic. I've tried it a few times and don't like to waste anything as well, but it's definitely an acquired taste.

Pretty soon we'll all be floating, and on to the next season.

What a funny write up! I laughed so hard.
I too have tried perch roe several different ways: batter fried, breaded, fried in bacon grease, pan fried in olive oil, mixed in with scrambled chicken eggs, boiled and although the taste isn't too terrible, the consistency really is a turn off, almost to gagging.

I think I'd rather eat beef or deer liver.

Any ol' salts out there had Balut?! A P.I. staple...
Perch roe is right up there with that so called delicacy!

I remember my Dad talking about "blue eggs" when I was a kid and we raised layers, or at least that what I thought he was saying.  I knew what it was, but never knew how it was spelled.  And NO, I have never tried it and never intend to.  The perch roe was bad enough!

I'm guessing the taste is dependent on the diet and water quality they are caught because my 6yr old daughter asks for them and knows which ones have roe. She's been eating them since she was knee high to a Smurf though. But she also eats escargo, mussels, and canned sardines. I wonder where she gets it? 😏

Good for her! Canned sardines are one of the healthiest fish you can eat on this planet as long as they are in water or light olive oil. I always carry a few cans of sardines and saltines in my pack while hunting or on adventures. Life savor.
Just add water.

I eat some every year. Usually early in the season. I wash and soak the sacks overnight in a bowl of salt water. Takes some of the fishy taste out. Then dip in egg and roll in flour. Deep fry. You do need to acquire a taste for them .

You might want to read this first.   ;D

Thanks for linking that! I know I’ve read it before but it was still hilarious to read again. Still laughing 😂
As a note, if you ever see the egg masses left after they are layed, you’ll see they are encased in a jelly like tube similar to frog eggs. That jelly is in the egg sacs of the female, and they are evolved to be very unpleasant for anything that may otherwise eat fish eggs.
