Shanty bottom icing, making hard pull.
« on: Jan 18, 2018, 09:38 AM »
Is there any treatment or wax that I can apply to the bottom of my shanty tub to reduce its tendency to ice up and make it very hard to pull? I pull out on ice and it slides great on the snow, then coming back its a bear. I get under as best I can and knock off what I can but it is tough. Do the runners help?

I'm new to ice fishing but I usr paraffin wax on the bottom of my kayak.  I'm not sure if it would work or not? I just picked up a used shanty and auger last Sunday.  I put it on the bottom  of the sled that holds all my stuff.  I'll find out this Saturday if it works.  I use my ollady's hairdryer to heat the bottom of the sled
I'll take a BAD day of fishing over a good day at work!

I went to Dunhams for some ski wax and they had none. I used P

I went to Dunhams for some ski wax and they were out. So as suggested I tried Paraffin Wax using a heat gun and it worked great. What a difference, the drag was so easy and iced bottom. Thanks so much for the help fellas. I am not sure how the ski wax would work. I am sure it would be just as good or better, as that is what it is designed for.

We use good old fashioned Turtle Wax and it seems to work quite well.

Happens to me sometimes when there's new snow on the ice weighing it down. Drill a hole and the water comes up and gets the bottom of the tub wet and it ices up with slush. Wax will help but it wears off at the worst possible time. I just pull the tub up on my Smitty sled and off I go.

I built a smitty sled about 2 years ago and love it.  Makes dragging in snow or grass much easier.  For my Jet sleds, I spray the liquid turtle wax for automobiles on the bottom about every 2 weeks and really seems to hold up.  Nez

I will second the the motion on the Smitty sled.  That makes a world of difference, this weekend I was out with a group and had drag a good bit more gear on top of my normal complement (2 person shanty, auger, etc.) well over 120lbs.  Very easy drag, no stops to catch my breath and was able to immediately start setting up without a break.

Didn't bring my Smitty on an outing last week ...conditions were hovering above freezing ...drag out with a loaded two man w/hyfax  and a Jet sled in tow in 5-6 of snow was manageable ...just before dark temps dropped some..well that changed every thing...dragged like a dead mule on my return to the launch .I  have had issues with my Smitty sled moving with temp changes too ..drags tough for a bit then will practically run you over ...standing the skis up helps with this on the return trip.

Sorry ,but I'm new to some of the lingo . What's a Smitty Sled ?

On the same note , I have a tip for all of you that have plastic windows in your tents . Lemon Pledge furniture polish works like Rain- X and also fills in the tiny scratches that make it hard to see out of .

Try candle wax. It worked on my sleds as a kid.
