Homemade sled pullers
« on: Jan 17, 2018, 07:52 PM »
I had seen a post from Ice Scratcher that showed a boat with a saw blade/motor assembly attached to haul out gear. I was wondering what other inventions were out there for powering you gear onto the ice. I’ve always been a very practical and resourceful person and love seeing something creative that works. Anyone got any good contraptions to share?

No picture but when I was a small kid we used the shetland pony to drag the 3 person sled on the ice. We loved it but the horse didn't.

How about pulling the sled with an ice boat?

Honestly the first time I saw a pic of an sawblade motor like icescratchers rig, I though it was for cutting ice and making holes.

My friend made something out of a old roto tiller, he used it to drag deer out of the woods. One time we used it to pull a big ice shack out on the lake. i can't remember exactly how it was set up? cleats on the tires and a big wheel in front I think. It would go as fast as you could walk but would pull without any effort. I think it even had 3 gears for different speeds.

I think this is a really good idea. Uses your auger to power it, so it saves you from needing to have ANOTHER engine to take care of.

I wonder about something using a HF Predator

https://www.harborfreight.com/engines-generators/gas-engines/65-hp-212cc-ohv-horizontal-shaft-gas-engine-epa-60363.html

A dogsled type machine, just small enough to lift easily by one person.....even the snowdog seems huge and heavy. (Not to mention no used market so the price is high right not). The Auger machine isn't ready and probably will end up being at least a $1000 when it is available and then you need a strong auger for it.

Just a tad off topic.  Years ago I was into ice sailing.  Had two Lockley Skimmers, still available from what I've seen online. Then in the quest for speed, I made a DN class boat.  Oh yeah, they are fast. Accelerate like a car, just the runners rattling on the ice, wind in your ears, little ice chips hitting you in the face. Turns like it's on rails. Ain't nothing like a soft water sail boat. When chit happens, it's quick to tell you " you effed up" A real thrill to hike up on two runners. In short, if you get a chance to have a go in one, go for it. Oh yeah, no brakes.

They emailed me saying they plan on selling those in US by the end of the year. Looks like a snowdog, but looks a little smaller and I hope smaller price. We shall see.

You people all know you can buy a beater snowmobile for short money, right?

Get to have a friend somehow tow you back if it quits too..

At least these are simple and light enough, if it wouldn't start, you could put it on a sled and drag it back...

Yes, you could get a decent beater for around $500 off season or $800 when there is snow. The sticker is like $60 in MN.....it is bulky, heavy and probably can't fit it in a short bed of small truck.

I think a diy type snowdog, or dogsled type machine would be ideal, no sticker needed, and should fit on a cargo carrier if not on the back of small truck or inside an suv. I've been exploring the use of a utility mini bike, but really no luck with that. I could try putting screws in the tires but I think that will destroy them basically for any other use....but......

I’ve actually considered getting one of those “fat tire” mountain bikes and putting studded tires on it. The gears wouldn’t make it too terrible. However, quality isn’t cheap and my boots do just fine. For now, it’s an 8’ foot rope attached to my Jet Sled, a galvanized carabiner, and a backpack with chest/waist straps I use as a harness and extra storage for dry wares. Clip the carabiner to the rope and the backpacks carry handle and away I go.

I’ve also had visions of putting tracks on my HHR....

Found this on google. Called KtraK. Don't know if it'd work on a fat tire bike but might be better! Watch videos on youtube, saw one with a small bike motor added to it to make it motorized. Let me know what you think.

No. I'm just showing what's out there. The more people that show interest, the likelier it is that somebody will open up the market.

The rigid mount handlebar on the mini might beat your arms up.  On the bigger machines, the chassis floats over the bumps.
