Ice anchor sharpening
« on: Jan 15, 2018, 08:27 PM »
I have recenrly had difficulty starting my hub style ice anchors and believe they are becoming dull. Is there a proper technique to sharpen them?

If you know the brand, tell us.    If they aren't Eskimo's , that is what you need, all others are made wrong/dull.

But your concept of sharpening is interesting, hm?

so they used to work fine and now they don't? i'd like to know the brand too.
maybe a work sharp belt sander could get their edge back.

some use a pilot hole predrilled for cheap versions.

i like using an anchor driver attached to my drill i use on my auger. they interchange fast. the best i found are the eskimo brand anchors but are fragile tips. be sure to never change the angle after the tip is just started. i broke one so far and pay closer attention to that problem.

They are the Eskimo brand, and have seen about 5 seasons of use.

It's more difficult to get ice screws into black ice.  Soft white honeycombed ice is easy.  I haven't need to sharpen my ice screws ever.  I've always wonder if or when I should.

The old Eskimo ice screws have a thin sharp point, very easy to hand drive into the ice.  Also easier for the point to roll or bend.  The newer ones have a more aggressive taper point.  They are more difficult to get to bite into black ice, especially when the ice is just cracking and chipping off.

Some start easier than others, but no noticeable difference visually. Definitely harder in black ice. I found I needed to start a hole with my hand spike in order to get them to bite, thus my question if sharpening is possible.

Do you run the strap and wood inside the hut to prevent freeze up?

I use the out side  anchors to the of the hub and keep my holes

clean or chip them out when I'm done I use my scoop to stick them under the ice  make sure you double your parachute cord  you will not believe how strong it will be
