Fort Peck
« on: Nov 13, 2017, 03:56 PM »
Hey guys,

I am trying to plan a trip to Fort Peck with a couple buddies this January and was wondering if it's realistic go without a snowmobile or ATV?

Are there any options to rent a sleeper shelter on Fort Peck?

Thanks in advance for your help!

Taking an atv or snowmobile out on the ice will depend what kind of winter we have and where you plan on going. As for the sleeper you’re sol, however there are plenty of cabins you can rent in various locations on the lake. If you’re thinking about getting a cabin I’d start looking into it now and get it reserved. Hope this helps, good luck.

We are thinking about trying the Duck Creek area out of Lakeridge. Anyone have any knowledge of that area? Think it would be worth while on foot?

You could do some good fishing on foot near Duck Creek.  Also, some other good areas are the last dredge cut (also called the trout pond).  It has a bunch of perch and some mid-range Pike.  Another place that can be covered on foot easily is Nelson Dredge (on the road towards Nashua) which is a dredge off the Missouri.  Have caught a lot of nice Pike/Walleye there especially if you can get close to where the Missouri flows by (just depends on ice thickness).  Also, there is a decent choke-point area by the gate houses of the damn that is easily accessible by foot.

You can do pretty well on foot out of Crooked Cr. in the bay.  Lots of good fishing within walking distance.

Went Fort Peck out of Hells Creek Marina twice last year.  The owner Clint and his family have been leasing the property that the marina and store is located on for the past 60ish years, and received a letter from the state stating that they were not going to renew the lease, and he only had 11 months left (as of 2/17) until he either persuaded the state to renew the lease or had to move.  I'm planning to head back out there this winter, and was wondering if anyone had heard any news as to the fate of the marina?  Clint and his family really do a great service to the fishing community in a remote area, and hope nothing ever changes out there.  Thanks!

Talked with Tester, Daines and our governor and they say he will get a new lease, we will see how truthful they are.

I'm going up Feb 4 to the 10th.
Anybody else be there?,

I'm pretty sure Eddy at the Lakeridge Motel does some guided trips on the ice. That might be worth checking too. I know they have a spear house or two set up usually. And they were nailing some walleye last winter when nobody else was.

Hell Creek is usually a safe bet.  Nice little store there and lots of areas to fish in Hell Creek Bay.  Tough to fish, however without an ATV or Sled, nice to be able to move around and even Hell Creek Bay is huge!

I have been trying to get ahold of Clint at hell creek marina in order to make reservations for the past month with no luck.   I started getting nervous everyone is booking up, so i got reservations at Lakeside motel in Fort Peck for mid-january. Never fished over there.  How is it?  Compare and contrast to Hell creek?

Icebeer,
Your questions in regards to compare/contrast, there is no clear answer, simply put, it's Peck! Just be thankful and greatful, as well as respectful out there. It's all big water and enjoy each moment out there, I fully understand your questions, but they will be answered to you once you set sites on the big pond! Good luck & enjoy it!

3 8-12lb lake trout

One lake trout in 40' everything else from 8-20'

I fished Peck last week, with 6 guys we were guiding out of the Lakeridge.  Excellent ice conditions everywhere we went, 12-15".  Out from the shaft houses, all the way out to Bear Creek, Duck was fine, just a little too much commotion on the weekends, so we looked for less disturbed areas.  Just about everywhere we went caught 10#/35" average northerns, lakers to 33" and eyes to 28".

Just this past Friday the morning sets brought a 43" pike and a 38" laker and several eater eyes.  My biggest takeaway was this...the feeding window changes almost daily, that is why you need to fish your maximum number of lines, and leave them overnight, which is legal.  You need to look at the belly contents of the first fish you keep, we had one morning that when we downsized our minnows/baits, we lit 'em up!  One day, the 10am to 2pm bite was HOT, next it was an evening bite.

The fish are everywhere, but you have to fish hard, check your lines often, keep your bait fresh.  We caught fish just out from the shaft house, an easy walk to several good spots, but you are really short changing yourself if you don't have at least ONE machine.

Plenty of lodging available at the Lakeridge, and Eddie and the gang offer everything from fully guided dawn to dark trips, to just a nudge in the right direction...and plenty of good quality bait.

Mike
If I\'m not fishing, I\'m probably thinking about fishing...And if I\'m thinking about fishing, I\'m probably not getting much else done so, I might as well go fishing...Yeah, I just said that!
